Also agree with a lot of Jon's logic on this one , trying to improve the team has to be the aim - yes Foulds has been steady, yes he's a local lad etc but this should not stop us looking to upgrade. Whether we have or not of course is a totally different matter.

Just hope the players belief in Hughes and his methods are not deteriorating with all the changes he is making.

It's not entirely up to them. It's as though they can throw a hissy fit like say Trossard has at Brighton.

They're unproven L2 players, both have an element of doubt as to whether they will make a living in the professional game.

So if they play well and Hughes welcome them back - then back they come, as they're under contract, wiser and perhaps better players.

I think we need to get used to an era where the club calls the shots as opposed to the last five, where numerous players have called the shots.

I don't have a problem with the club/Hughes calling the shots as long as they get more right than wrong.

The players we have loaned out will come back knowing the club / manager does not want them and the loan players brought in will go back to there parent club owing us nothing

Possibly the case with Young but if you listen to what Hughes said today, it was Foulds that wanted the move away, not Hughes. He said Foulds had made a bit of a presumption that he wasn't going to be featuring as much and he was a bit surprised that he wanted away rather than wanting to stay and fight for his place.

Maybe the reason Foulds looked so unhappy to be at Harrogate wasn't because he was devastated he'd been sent there. Maybe it was because it was just starting to dawn on him what he's done.

Or he realised the ride he got as a “home made” player was coming to an end?
Nothing against the lad whatsoever, but the regression is there for all to see. If what MH says is true then it’s dawned on Matty too? Good luck to him. I doubt he will return.

Thinking about it, the start of the regression seemed to coincide with when we first started to hear Ridehalgh was on his way back from injury. Maybe Foulds started to think his time playing week in week out was at risk around that time and it started to affect his performances. If that was his thinking, it's no wonder he went into full panic mode when we brought Bola in as well.
Like you, I've nothing against him and he's never really let us down, but if the lad doesn't have confidence in his own ability and thinks he's going to be dropped the minute another player is available, I can't see Hughes having faith in him going forward either. Unless Harrogate 'develop' him of course, lol.

One might say he was the archetypal full back of yester year. That he did moderately well however the “ modern” full back is deemed to be almost equal to a second winger, relentlessly getting up an down the line . Full back helping winger, winger helping and supporting the full back. The pairing just hasn’t worked for me this season down the left , certainly in comparison with the right side. Halliday and AN Other made it work, Foulds and AN Other it never seemed to?

It is a mistake letting him go. He is a good defender especially in the air and puts decent crosses in. The new player.is unknown with a record of injuries. Foulds given the chance to get off the merry go round that Hughes is creating took the chance to move to a well run club and who can blame him. He will do well there and hope his replacement does well here but it is a gamble we did not have to take

He WANTED to leave because he wasn’t prepared to fight for his place . Source …Mark Hughes.

Says not to believe all you read. It came out of the blue because it was engineered for him by the club. Hughes made it clear to his agent that he would be at least second or third choice after the window and found Foulds a club that has been impressed by him and asking for him

To be honest I respect Foulds for making the decision. It's clear as day Foulds ain't gonna get a game as long as the new lad is fit so for me he's made the right decision.

I think he's the only LB they've got so it will be Harrogate that look like the tits if he doesn't play.

    Think that’s a bit harsh.

you know as a player if the manager likes you and maybe Hughes has been chirping up at him for a while and this has been on the cards.

players wanna play end of the day - fair play to him not being content to rot on the bench.

its a good move for him - close by, he has a young family, and the commute is doable.

i hope it works out for him and are a little disappointed we’ve moved him on to replace him by a 24 yo who has started only 12 games or something in his entire career. Is that really an upgrade on Foulds?

Playing for a club he will of dreamed about as a kid

Playing in front of 17k fans

Coached by one of the biggests names in the business

    Starting most matches

Not getting pelters and seen as one of our own.

    In the promotion chase

    Not been dropped yet

    18mths left on contract

Leaves at first sign of pressure ... Think he will regret it

It can’t have been easy for him as I know how much he loves the club. However, he’s done his time warming benches - including biding his time last year when Ridehalgh was in good form. I don't think he’s a bottler as you/Hughes are implying. I think he knows his limits, will know Hughes is wanting more from him offensively, and he is probably just being honest with himself and acknowledging his own limitations- he isn’t a marauding Uhlembeek/Meredith-type fullback, so he’s moved elsewhere, probably to a club with the expectation of him as a fullback is mainly to defend? He’s defensively very solid and good enough for this level, for sure.

In our system we need width from fullbacks but other teams might not?

He was a CB at Bury/Everton I think. Being asked to bomb on at LB probably isn’t what he ideally wants - but guess he’s been happy just to get gametime even if its at LB, after a frustrating spell in Como previously, especially with it being at his hometown club.
