Ok so its not been the end to the season we all wanted but trying to look at this in a balanced way.
On the plus side a massive improvement albeit from a very low base! Fans reconnected with the club after a toxic few years. Some cracking away days and big home crowds. The atmosphere for the Carlisle game was the best I've seen in years and would have been unthinkable under Adams.
On the negative side, the squad always felt a little short. Januarys recruitment very poor, and all season we've had slowest midfield I can remember. Thats the reason we've dropped so many points at home as we've been so easy to play against. I'm not going to mention the substitution yesterday!
Theres a lot of talk about us playing from the back. I actually don't have a problem with that continuing. We need pace and movement throughout though to pull it off as Orient have shown.
MH has another year on his contract. For me, he gets the oportunity to build on the pluses of this season whilst hopefully learning from whats gone wrong and putting that right. If it doesnt work out then a parting of the ways is of course inevitable

 

And that leader most certainly isn't our captain.
Doesn't appear to motivate his team, puts hands on hips and looks to the ground when things go against us.
Oh for a Gary Jones or Stuart McCall in that team.
For me I give the armband to Sam Stubbs - he was the only player to come out and face the media after the game - where was Captain 'crab' Smallwood, still sulking??

 

Twist.

I think many people saying keep Hughes are doing it purely because they believe that the club needs continuity and not because he's a good coach/manager. I would love to have a long serving manager that gets us where we want to be and keep us there. But what has Hughes actually done? Got us to 6th place in a terrible league with what Sparks said was our biggest ever budget for this league.

I've been to all but 4 games this season and I've walked out of most wins wondering how on earth we've won that as we didn't deserve it. The football is awful, all he does on the touchline is complain to the officials while his opposite number is consistently coaching their players.

What are our tactics from corners free kicks even throw ins? It's just a case of lob it in and hope for the best. If he came here with a reputation for good football and had a bit of success you could land the issues on footballers at this level not being intelligent enough to understand him. But this isn't the case, and there is absolutely no signs of Hughes being a good manager and next season under him will be yet another of failure

 

So, had Banks not created the goal for Derbyshire, we were going to take him off for Platt anyway, while we were behind?

 

Well I don’t agree with her. I think if they want equivalent pay they need to generate the fans and sponsors who are prepared to back that kind of salary. They also need to separate themselves fully from the men’s game. Then you can legitimately ask for extra pay.

 

Getting concerned with him not gonna lie and it’s not because we have lost the first game of the season I’m looking at the last one aswell. We look to have regressed and I’m unsure if he sees it. Worried.

The problem for Hughes right now is that he's gone for size over athleticism at the back. That starting defence today should never play together in that formation again. He needs to shift out some of the non starters and get quality in the side.

 

I'm not really interested in either Wrexham or Notts County, and don't know enough about the context of either other than to say they both achieved success last season whereas we didn't.

I wouldn't sack Hughes yet either, that'd be a nonsense. The time to assess, is approaching the January window.

 

Because the managers of County and Wrexham achieved their remit of progression and promotion. It’s not about the opening game of the season, it’s where the team finds itself on the opening day of the season. I’m not for sacking MH, but I certainly think RS should be looking at results in blocks of ten.

I could write a big piece but why bother, feck off Hughes.

 

If sparks and Rupp can’t hear the depressingly obvious boos at full time, then they can all get in the same car with Hughes and suck off into the funset together.

This is the problem - there’s no one telling them it’s not working (other than the fans). MH tells RS all is going to click, RS tells SR that season ticket sales are rosey and we’re not losing money. A complete deluded circle.

 

Spot on. No one with any idea about football above him at the club so he uses his standing in the game to continually pull the wool over their eyes. A DoF wouldn’t be so foolish. Or a proper chairman who isn’t a sleeping investor.

wake up Sparks. Hughes is a dead man walking.

 

..and they were hardly difficult games either.

We have definitely gone backwards massively so far this season and we are now in no better position than when Hughes took over 20 months ago.

No, but can't we be a little more optimistic - even if just for a few hours!

 

To add to my previous post we need the right message delivered with this appointment now.

The aim will always be promotion out of this Khazi league but if we state from day one of his appointment he is here to overhaul the whole club from a medical point of view right through to training methods and scouting. You name it let him do it and Sparks sticks to increasing the budget, then fans will buy into it.

We have long needed an overhaul and it feels a little like we have combined DoF with a manager now. It had to be done. Let’s concentrate some of our money on the background team too. Get some proper coaches in, some proper quality medical staff and sports scientists and then look after our players and make them fitter and it will only benefit us on the pitch longer term. Once all that is set up then we can increase the playing budget and get the right calibre of player in. it’s long been neglected
