Well this year is the first in a long time we haven’t improved our league position. Grayson’s results were terrible and he turned us down not the other way around. Hardly looks like a commitment to a masterplan does it?

 

When was there only Gary Megson to choose from, there's a whole range of experience managers out there, why try and make a point using just him?

 

Didnt the owners originaly offer Grayson a 2 year deal, maybe that's where they get the impression we're too big to employ someone with little managerial experiance, maybe thats the calibre they thought we were capable of bringing in, they should have known better.

 

He's probably the manager out of all those mentioned with the most "experience" and it was just an example

 

This is precisely why we must not have a young rookie taking charge. The owners are rookies, Drury is a rookie to his role, it is too big a risk to then appoint a rookie manager. We need a head coach with experience and somebody who Edin & Rupp can learn a thing or two from, otherwise it is a huge gamble with little to no experience throughout the entire club. A recipe for disaster barring a miracle.

 

How do you define a "successful" manager or measure it? What is "success"?

Is it purely based on winning promotions, increasing the value of players in the squad, finishing in the top 6, not being relegated? For me, it depends on the circumstances. For example, who was the more successful manager last season Parky or Steve Bruce? I'd argue Parky even though Villa came within a whisker of Premier League promotion. Villa are now starting to sweat, with a third season of Championship football on the horizon.

We need a manager who is right for what we want to achieve, whether that person actually exists seems questionable at the moment.

 

Don't see the relevence to be honest? Why people think we're too big to employ anyone is beyond me. We should go for the best person capable of doing the job he or she is asked to do.

 

Parky survived by a miracle on the last day, he got lucky. Bolton fans know that and still aren't keen of him.
Villa fans on the other hand didn't have to sit through loss after loss each week, Steve Bruce almost got them promoted in a division where there's about 10 clubs who have just as much right to get into the premiership.

 

I’d say generally your final league position being above your relative playing budget is the best measure of achievement. Bruce failed and sparky didn’t as you say.

Well what would you call a bottom of the table budget then?

 

I don't really see why we're assuming the head coach won't have a say in transfers when everything we've seen and heard has indicated that he will have a say....just not total control.

Similarly with the style of play. It's not that the coach will have the style of play dictated, surely it's that they're going to pick a coach whose preferred style of play matches what we think is necessary to be successful.

previous management experience is not essential in my mind, my preferences aren't based on the fact they've worked before - though it is helpful.

Yep, just get further from your original point there fella, what would you say our budget is just out of interest? You seem to think it's a rather good budget don't you?

 

The set-up R&R are trying for seems very familiar to someone living on this side of the ocean.Greatly simplified, the owner(s) hire a General Manager and provide the budget; the GM is really the head of the sporting aspects of the team, and amongst other things establishes the overall playing philosophy for the organisation, sets up the scouting side, takes charge of player recruitment, and hires the head coach/manager, who works with the players with which he's provided. The coach/manager is involved with recruitment, but that is not his primary job. When things go wrong, the GM fires the coach and hires a new one; when things go really wrong, or keep going wrong, the owner(s) fire both GM and coach, and start again.

There are staffs and departments and nuances involved with all of this, and the owner(s) may well have a say in overall playing philosophy and hire appropriately, but that is the basic set-up.

With us, Edin seems to want to be both owner and GM; that is where the problems begin. Owners who meddle in team affairs are not unknown over here, and the results are mixed at best. It would be better to have a specialist in as GM aka Head of Football aka Director of Football, and let him get on with it.
