Main Strikers lack of goals

With the season now 25% in, my view is that our main strikers are really not scoring frequently enough.

Vaughan is on three goals, which if he were to continue to score at the same rate, would lead to a total of 12 over the season.

Donaldson has only two goals. Using the same formula he will not get into double figures!

I accept that they offer more than just goals, but if we are to secure an automatic place, then a striker who gets 15-19 goals a season, would seem to be very important. I deliberately avoided using the 20 a season target!

All of the other top eight clubs, have at least one player in the top scorers table. Three of them have played for City. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/league-two/top-scorers

Great that we are scoring with other players getting the goals, but as strikers you would expect a far better return from a ‘promotion chasing’ team.

I wonder if Donaldson is trying to hard and that is why he seems to be missing sitters, whereas Vaughan seems to play fairly deep.

Not sure what can be done about it, if indeed we need them to score more.

I agree with this and whilst it is not uncommon for 1 striker to out score the other, we don’t seem to have any striker banging them in.

But, is that down to service, rather than the quality of our forwards? Take the 2 sitters away from Donaldson, have our forwards missed many other chances? Our wingers do excite, but their final ball is often over-hit, looped up or too close to the keeper. I can’t recall many missed chances and certainly not what I’d call good chances (half-chances, maybe). Even if we add those 2 sitters of Donaldson and the Vaughan penalty miss, it still wouldn’t bring their figures up by much (both would be on 4 each).

In contrast, even despite a slow start to the 1998/99 season, after 12 games we had scored 19 goals, with Mills bagging 7 and Blake 3. The other 9 were shared around the squad

    It boils down to service.

The first few games or so Doyle was playing as a AM and our CM was tosh and we were not playing 4-4-2.

We need play with with wingers that like to get the ball down and run.

If I am right when Harry plays on the wing and he's our best crosser Donaldson or Vaughan score.

Harry is now playing behind the forward.

Donaldson is a handful to mark and makes plenty of space for others.

Overall, nothing to worry about. I don't care who scores as long as we win.

We're 3rd in the league without our main forwards firing.. Wait until they start getting a grip of this league.

Vaughan could have had ten at least and Donaldson at least eight. We are fine and winning

Same could be said about the lack of goals from midfield. Akpan with 2 and then a glut with 1 goal.

Let's look back to last season and Lincoln City, the eventual champions.

Top scorers John Akinde with 15, Bruno Andrade with 10, Shay Mccartan with 7 and Harry Anderson with 5.

These were the top 4 goalscorers in the league with lots of other players contributing. Similar pattern developing with our squad?

I'm confident Vaughan will finish with a healthy amount and overtake at least 2 if the 3 players mentioned by the OP. Either way though there's only 5 teams scored more goals than us so we aren't struggling in that department at the minute.

Not sure who the 2/3 players 'mentioned' by the OP are? I only named Donaldson and Vaughan who are our main strikers. You got me there.

I absolutely love Donaldson and what he brings to the team, but he’s starting to accumulate a portfolio of missed sitters. Another yesterday in the first half, trying to hit it with his right foot and puts it wide. Unbelievable

    No schitt, Rod ......
Jeeze most of us were saying this in AUGUST.
Let's just see how it pans out, huh ?
    WHY ?? ........

Newport have only scored 12 in 12 games, whilst conceding only six !!
Conversely ....... City have scored 19 in 13 games, conceding just 12 goals.

My point ? Simple ......... It's cheaper and easier to coach conceding fewer goals, than to pay for a striker who can score 20+ (perhaps) ;) goals.
    IF City finish as Lge 2 Champions, - who cares if it's a GD of +1 ? .......... OR minus 100 ???

Great points. I think teams have to worry about quite a few attacking elements to our side. We are creating chances. Of course you want your strikers scoring but it’s not the be all and end all. Especially if you become reliant

Wood is our best crosser without a doubt.

Could have had 10 and 8? In what world was that? I can’t recall keepers making that many saves from either and neither have ‘missed’ as many as that.

Some missed chances, but not that many. I agree with Fordy, we’re not creating enough for the front player(s)

A portfolio? That’s his 2nd or at the very worst, his 3rd.

I think he’s referring to the ‘3 players that have previously played for City’ comment.

“All of the other top eight clubs, have at least one player in the top scorers table. Three of them have played for City.https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/league-two/top-scorers

But the very same player would have around 12 assists. I'd take that from one player alone.

Say by your reckoning, CD gets close to double digit figures for goals, alone he would be directly involved in around 20 goals. Not bad in my book. Around a 1 in 2 involvement across the whole of a season.

Vaughan has deserved to score more especially early on
Donaldson will score his fair share and he offers much more as others have ssid
