The problem with accepting "smoke" at grounds would be that nobody will react to the beginnings of a real fire when it happens. When our main stand burned down in 1985, part of the reason for an initial lack of response was that there had been a habit of setting fire to newpapers on the concrete terracing and jumping across them during dull games. There was actually several minutes of smoke which would have allowed a significant stand clearance if people had appreciated it was a smouldering minor fire under the seating. Unfortunately, smoke was often seen so nobody thought much of it until they saw flames suddenly leap several feet high. The rest is tragedy.

I would ban all pyrotechnics and "smoke" at all crowded events so everybody knows it's time to evacuate if the smoke of a real fire is seen.

And yet throughout Europe there are pyros all the time and no one seems to bat an eyelid. Of course there are dangers and some authorities make the right noises but it continues without any significant outrage. I'm not defending them, just pointing out the general difference in approach.

Every game in Europe i've been to have had them in the crowd somewhere. Each to their own but they don't personally bother me.

In fairness, when there's red, green and blue smoke billowing out of stands not once have I ever thought that it might be due to a fire.

Even the smell gives it away so whilst I'd like the use of these pyros to stop I think it's a bit of a stretch when suggesting it could cause issues in the event of a real fire.
