Well tomorrow at 10am is the League Cup first round draw. Such is the organisation of this it will be drawn to take place on the 5th September to open the season, however there is an international fixture list taking place that weekend so games could be moved to the week before.

Then the much anticipated League Trophy draw will take place at 1.30pm, which will be the 3 group games with the Premier League kids having 1 side in each group.

So in a season which is starting a month late, we are still shoehorning this abomination of a competition into the fixture list whilst at the same time suggesting that FA cup replays can't be accommodated. That's before what has happened with Celtic and Aberdeen in Scotland and Salford and Hull in Rugby league where multiple games will be postponed due to players catching CoVid and being forced to isolate. If this runs it's course that is 8 extra games in a shorter season just to give the premier league kids some play time.

I can see some clubs playing up to 4 times a week.

Finances from these competitions could be vital to some clubs in this climate, interested to get the thoughts of the club to see if we are one of them. Suppose we’ll know by the strength of the team we put out in the trophy games.

or you could embrace the fact that EFL clubs need the cash and just take the 20k for turning up

Agree. As much as we all hate the FL trophy, I hope we take it seriously this season, given it's something like 10k per win I think.

They don't get 20k for turning up, the lower league side has to fund the game being played on their ground and only get such a bonus if they win. The pot of gold at the end was a full Wembley but even that's off the table now.

So the participation fee of 20k doesn't count?

It's £20k for simply participating in the competition and then as you say, £10k for a win and £5k for a draw in the early stages. Last season the average pay out from the competition was around £45k for each Div 2 team. It's not megabucks even for a club in the khazi but there might be additional matchday revenues to offset against the costs of staging the games. Its importance to the club is that the player costs fall outside the salary cap and if the club has any sense, they'll use the extra cash as cup bonuses or appearance money without impacting the salary cap and make it slightly more attractive to the players.

Whether it's worth the effort to stage this competition in a crowded fixture list this coming season is questionable.

It costs money to put on 3 games all this is just swallowed up.

It wouldn't be so tragic if the EFL hadn't have said this,

“Due to the unprecedented challenges facing the fixture calendar as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and starting six weeks later than usual, the Sky Bet EFL Championship will feature 13 midweek match rounds whilst League One and League Two will have 11 respectively throughout season 2020-21,” said an EFL statement.

There is no way you can come at it with the we can't fit in FA Cup replays whilst at the same time there is space for an 8 game competition.

These league's might not have the finances due to reduced income to finish the season, nevermind piling games on them in a schedule that is already full to bursting before the season kicks off without bad weather postponements or postive Covid tests.

I’m confused, City have announced we will play Doncaster and Oldham in the EFL Cup - I thought the draw was tomorrow?
Or is that just when they add the invited teams?

Just seen the draw with the EFL clubs is done on the quiet. The draw for the U23s is done tomorrow at 1.30pm as if it is a treat for the EFL clubs to be playing them.

You don’t sound as though you feel privileged to be gracing the same pitch as the great ones!

As we have Oldham in our group, I'm suprised they won't throw in Leicester and one other Manchester Team to hold our very own CoVid lockdown cup in this competition.

Going to have to be able to beat teams from our own division if we are to have a cup run - we can beat Bolton as long as we go there with the right frame of mind

I hope we take the cups more seriously this year. Just threw them away last season. Carabao not the best for prize money but get a decent draw later on and chance of it being on tv which would help

Bolton have invested heavily in a bright, up and coming manager who has used sophisticated modern methods to assemble an impressive squad. We have gone back to tried and tested failures in both manager and players while spending as little as possible. We can't lose.
