Les Dennis?

 

Dennis would have a decent signing for me. He was one of a handful of strikers who scored 20 plus goals in the bottom 2 divisions last season and was well liked by Chesterfield fans. At worst he's proven to be a more goal scorer than Poleon and Mcarten and at best he continues his goalscoring form from last season. I guess we'll never find out now.

 

Mark McNulty shows the difference, in league's. We've lost nothing here.

 

But would you have been prepared to pay £150,000 for him that Notts County are rumoured to be paying ?.

 

As someone else alluded to I think we will be putting money into wages this year rather than transfer fees

 

That should go down well with who have signed for us recently.

It depends what our budget is. If we can afford it, then yes.

 

But isn’t that just what you were criticising us last year for. We spent money on players doing well League two McCarten and Reeves division one. Dennis might have been great for us but the gamble would be exactly the same

 

I criticised us paying fees for Mcarten, Reeves and Poleon for 2 reasons. Either they were complete wank (Poleon) or there were players imo just as good available for free (Reeves and Mcarten). I'm struggling to think of any strikers who scored 20+ goals last season,are out of contract and are within our wage structure. So Dennis, unlike the other 3, would offer us something which we would struggle to get for free, and would have therefore been worth paying a fee for if affordable.

Ross Hannah was jumping about 10 divisions, I'm not surprised he didn't make the step up. Unlike Speight, Dennis already has experience in this division and had a respectable goal tally for someone making his debut in pro football and was jumping up two whole divisions. He:s now far more familiar with the pro game and has proved to be a regular goal scorer at a respectable level and one not a million mikes away in terms of quality from the one we are in. Not everyone makes the step up, but he would have been far less riskier than either of those two examples.

I wouldn't have said no to Dennis but let's not forget, those 20 goals were scored in L2, not L1. I think the fact we didn't go back in for him (formerly) suggests we probably have other targets in mind.

 

I'd have had him for a £100K, reasonable wages, if we couldn't find better in August

I just think we rightly don't have to go flying in for an inflated price

 

Well back in Jan 2018 city were prepared to pay £175,000 and felt it was a good price.
In 4 months his fee drops to £150,000 and a three year contract yet they now dont want him?
Strange that.

There is the "we can do better" line but we shall soon find out if that is true.

 

Positive there is a Woodroyd Rd , West Bowling connection somewhere Dave because my aunt , who is about 10 older than me lived there, was busom buddies with Pauline.

I do know she originated from LHorton though

 

When it was muted we were possibly interested I said on a free, not realising he would cost a fee, and I have not changed my opinion he had a good season at Chesterfield last season let's see if he can repeat it this coming season for one of league two favorites for promotion.
