Akpan will do a good job there alongside Wright

Of course, Akpan and Wright are both central midfielders. And what happens when one or other is injured or loses form or is having a poor game or is suspended or MCwants to play with 5 in midfield, then what? Our options have already been closed down.

I agree in an ideal world another would be welcome but finances have to be taken into account especially as hopefully at least one good striker is still needed

Surprised as on paper Wright is one of the poorest signings we’ve made, I wouldn’t even have had him in the starting 11.

Of course finances are important but nobody on here has any real understanding on the true position. Well, I certainly don't and I doubt you do either.

But without proper cover and options to change the team, we'll be in the same position as last season when we have to field players with niggles or more serious injuries and didn't have the options to rest them or rotate them. And look at how that approach caught up with us in mid season. If we haven't learned from that period then I worry we'll do it all over again this coming season.

One of the performance stat companies (it may have been Opta) produced some stats last season on player availability. They said that over the entire season, in the EFL, a team has 4 players unavailable for various reasons for each and every game. And that ranges from extremes of 1 to 6 players! Imagine what would happen if one of our 4 were Akpan or worse if 2 of the 6 in that extreme example were Akpan and Wright. That's why if being a promotion contender is our aim, we need a little more quality and depth in the squad to avoid a repetition of last season.

ps And yes, another quality striker and midfielder are still required

I hope he shows good grace and lets Edin go up and collect it.

Killer won’t play every game and isn’t guaranteed to play.

He'll probably end up at West Ham to take Josh Cullens place in the squad.

We don't know much about how the new players have integrated but Wright seems a good talker and communicator which is key for the role.

It can only bode well that there were probably a few other contenders for the role such as O'Connor, Kilgallon, McGowan, Riley, O'Donnell. The best changing rooms have many voices - one thing that was clearly lacking last season.

You probably were not around in the sixties, but I've got scrap books from that era and chairman Stafford Heginbotham said that we will operate with a squad of 16 and only if someone leaves will any more come in. He upped it to 20 when we got promoted to the 3rd division in 1969 . Only one sub in those days of course but we somehow managed. He would have been staggered with the numbers we have now.

it's a shame Killa didn't get it. I guess he's a rotation option at best. I think he was the best candidate.

hopefully this news means we ship out Reeves, he's not very good.

Good choice to give it to someone new - the boys club atmosphere apparent under McCall has to be swept away.

Rather than rushing him out of the door, Reeves could be an option for back up if one of the other central midfielders gets injured?

As it stands, there is only Reeves and Devine as back up if Wright or Akpan cannot play. There is also potentially O’Connor but I’m not sure whether he has been brought in to play in that position.

I’d just be wary over having a lack of squad depth after witnessing last season which resulted in players getting played out of position. As well as that, I believe it’s healthy for competition if there are back up players to challenge rather than players believing they will never be dropped if they are not performing.

That's quite a bit of surprise for me ........... I know we never saw the best of Wright at Southend (partly due to being played out of position at times) but also he didn't seem to be a leader or someone "driving" the team forward. We had plenty of injuries whilst he was with us but still didn't grab a midfield position as his own.

Still that's what any manager has to do in this division with a tight financial position - take a player and get them to play well for your team.

I wish him well for the coming season.
