Funny how I can name all of those lads from 50 years ago, but would hardly recognise anyone from last season.

Promotion night at Darlington, 69 Wallace Arnold coaches and all identical was very confusing. But my memories of Jimmy Wheeler was when as a schoolboy i was asked if would like to go down to City training on evenings. On finishing we used to line up outside his office and on entering he would be sat behind a desk with coins piled up and he would say now then son how much was you'r bus fare and reimburse us from the pile. Happy days.

Happy memories of Jimmy Wheeler and the 68/69 promotion season. Stafford only allowed 16 players yet few got injured then, talking to Charlie Rackstraw a few months ago and he said if you were injured you missed your £2 appearance bonus. He actually invited my dad into the dugout in a game against Halifax town . R.I.P Jimmy.

The police escorted us City fans round to the other end of the ground, the teams came back out and City ran out 3 - 1 winner on that Friday night, what a celebration the City players coming back out with booze and had a few beers with them.Idlebantam, Jayteebee and pns1945 like this. -

A sad loss as you say took us to promotion in 68/69 season with a run of 21 games undefeated, just reading a little about the man in wiki : Wheeler had been booked just once during his 16-year playing career, but on 6 December 1969 in an FA Cup tie at home to Lincoln City he fell foul of the FA during a touchline outburst. Wheeler was fined £35 and censured and instead had a direct telephone line installed between his seat in the stand and the bench.

Although I started watching in 1966, the Jimmy Wheeler era are my first real memories of watching City. I still have the scrap books covering his time as manager here.
RIP Jimmy, and deepest condolences to his family and friendsBronco likes this. -
