January 2024 Transfer Window

Potentially some fairly named strikers on the way to L2.....The Sun are reporting that Wrexham have reached out to Sheff Weds for Lee Gregory, who is expected to leave this window. A bigger fish they are trying to lure in is Jonson Clarke-Harris. Peterborough are looking to sell Clarke-Harris this window due to him being out of contract in the summer and looking for a new challenge. Posh accepted an £800k offer for Clarke-Harris on deadline day in the summer from Bristol Rovers, but the paperwork wasn't submitted on time. With 6 months left on his contract and an iffy season so far fitness wise, I doubt they'd get something around that mark again. Charlton and Bristol Rovers are expected to enquire about JCH too according to The Sun.

A big if, rumoured if, but if these moves go ahead, it is expected that Wrexham will add target-man Ollie Palmer to the transfer list. Palmer has also been left out of the last few squads with no confirmation of injury or external matter, but with 18 months left on his deal would command a fee.

They've already got Mullin, Palmer and Fletcher, and their top scorer is still Elliott Lee.

Don't really see the value, but not my problem either.

 

It seems they are taking it season to season, and just buying enough goals then bin them off after promotions. Lee has been playing the 10/free roam role behind the 2 all season and just signed a new deal, rumoured to now be their highest earner.

Fletcher doesn't look fit it seems to relay on, only managed 2 starts this season and scored in 3 of his 14 appearances, although the last time out he did get a hattrick. If they bring 2 in, they can get money for Palmer to offset it and Fletcher will likely be released in the summer.

 

I suppose in terms of 'just get to League One' it might make sense - but it's a very expensive way to go about it, almost pointlessly so.

They seem to have a weird attraction to old pros from a higher level. I'm not really sure why. Guys like Lee Gregory and Steven Fletcher aren't exactly highly commercial names or acquisitions, they're just... a bit old.

Anyway, like I say, not my problem, they're doing fine as it is thanks largely to the players in their prime.

 

Stubbs has been a good defender for us but his main problem is his pace - he so slow. But in a back 3 that shouldn’t matter all that much if you have pacier defenders alongside you.

He’s just an unfortunate victim of having too many players at the club at the moment.

 

Afoka has gone, Tulloch as good as gone. No chance either was remaining with us.

 

Walker, Halliday and SMallwood signed on initial 2 year deals - we have an option of a 3rd so they will be only leaving for free this summer if we say so.

Platt is out of contract in July. I am not worried about that one.

 

Ridehalgh is a good defender. One thing I notice about him is he is very street smart, Suppose that comes with experience. Decent crosser of the ball, an under Adams, was a very good threat on the left hand side with his crossing ability. That being said, the injuries and age have caught up to him. He is slow, doesn't get forward enough, due to his physical inability to get back into position should the opposition counter, an overall, just not a good fit for the LWB role. Needs moving on.

Richards is a breath of fresh air, an has the physical attributes to be a decent LWB. But we can upgrade on him, and should the oppertunity arise, we should take it.

 

Personally, whatever finances we free up from offloading the likes of Tulloch, Afoka, Derbyshire, Chapman, Stubbs, we should reinvest that money into 2 key positions. One being LWB an the other being CM. We look light there. All it takes is for Smallwood to get suspended or Gillead to get injured an we're having to resort to Mcdonald or Osadebe for the role

 

He looks unfit to me and has done all season. It could be his frame but he doesn’t look the most athletic player we have.

 

I think we will see a new LWB for sure this winter. I'd like a new CM, again it's how much money can we free up. With the amount of bodies in the squad, we must have spent up the budget? I hope GA doesnt just fall back on his old favourite Josh Morris on a 6 month deal to cover CM but he's signed him a bunch of times. Would like another leggy option in midfield if we went for that area.

I've got a feeling we will bring in a target man too, and Oliver will look to leave to get first team football.

 

I very much doubt Derbyshire will be leaving and even if so, cannot imagine if frees up much funds as we will be paying him off.

 

He’s erratic for sure, but the promise is there when it’s applied.

 

Hollywood excesses and pocket money speaks. Nobody can compete with limitless “ investment”, “loans” “top ups” , “gifts” .

Ollie Palmer is class. Can we swap Cook for Him?

 

We definitely need more in CM. We can't keep flogging Gilliead and Smallwood and he doesn't seem to want to play McDonald despite him showing he had a good eye for a pass. It's amazing both Gilliead and Smallwood and have got this far on in the season without an injury already. We're very thin in the centre.

 

Clarke-Harris rumoured to be Gills boud for £900k.!!

 

Fairly big move in the division.... Danny Cowley has become the new Colchester manager!
