Having been distracted by the science of COVID for far too long, I'm hoping to be able to shift my focus back to my real area of science, astronomy and cosmology.

After 25 years of preparation, the James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled to launch at 12:20 UTC on Wednesday 22 December.

The James Webb Space Telescope is one of the most significant developments in our planet's space programme and it is the largest and most powerful space telescope ever constructed.

The telescope will look for the light from the very first galaxies and stars that formed after the big bang, as well as studying the atmospheres of exoplanets.

So much is expected of the James Webb but, as Hubble showed us, it is also the unexpected things it may reveal that make it the most anticipated launch in decades.

So, is anyone else on here interested in the James Webb, astronomy or cosmology?

If you combine astronomy with cosmology, do you get astrology? :p

The launch of the James Webb is fantastic news. Who knows how it will change thinking over the next couple of decades. I'm more astronomy and astrophotography. I'll forward one of my images to you to have a look at.

I think Carl Sagan had something to say about such things:

For me it's not just the size of our planet but the time that we are here, 70 odd years or so, it's hardly the blink of an eye, why bother..?

Yep, looking forward to this launch, praying nothing goes wrong after all this time. There's a thread on Reddit, talking about the telescope having a closer look at Proxima Centauri B due to light being detected on there in the past. Would be an amazing discovery if they are artificial!

A couple of short postponements, the latest for weather, means that the planned launch is now on Christmas Day. The target is to launch as early as possible within the launch window of 12:20 to 12:52 UTC/GMT.

Yeah-I have always been interested to understand how something can be created out of nothing. You look at what we know of space and it's a small fraction.

Where did all the matter come from to generate all the stars and galaxies we know about?

Hopefully this telescope can bring some answers to that.

Trying not to go all Douglas Adams, that may indeed be the ultimate question. And whilst James Webb will be able to look back to just 200 million years or so after the big bang, it may be able to discover some tantalising clues.

James Webb should help provide answers to a lot of things we know we don't know, but what also excites a lot of scientists are the possible unknown unknowns it may turn up, things that we just didn't expect, things that could turn our 'understanding' of the universe upside down and inside out.

    Exciting times ahead.

The rollout of the Ariane 5 rocket (carrying the James Webb Space Telescope) has begun, ahead of its Christmas Day launch.

Latest is 5:00am launch whist is 10:00am your time. If the Webb scope gives us as much as 1% of what the Hubble has given us, it will be amazing.
I would suggest that in terms of our understanding of the universe, the Hubble has been nothing short of amazing. The long “deep field” exposure shot into apparent nothingness and darkness was a game changer.
That said, my favorite image is the “pillars of creation”.

The countdown clock is still counting down to a 12:20 UTC/GMT launch in a window of 12:20 to 12:52 UTC/GMT.
