Even before the odds were out there was more than one poster on The Gills message-board saying please not Karl Robinson. I share their sentiment.

For heavens sake not Karl Robinson he makes Hughes look like PEP. One of the most overated guys in football and a mystery how he has made a living from it

Sparks hired Hughes because he was the most experienced and talented in the application process. Nobody had any issues at the time and I bet a quick search on here suggests you didnt.

Time and time again you say we need to rhink big and lack ambition. You would have crowed that was the case if we had turned him down.

    Don’t be so sure

Wilson was quite impressive on the right, Tulloch is promising too. Chapman to come in…perhaps better than we think?

Clearly a £3m budget is more than enough at this level. Even an idiot should be able to work out that the budget is enough but its how it was spent.

We have 33 players earning senior contracts. 18 can make the match day squad. Its a case of quantity over quality once again.

I didn't think Sparks would pull the trigger this quick but after his 'leaner and meaner' comments in July and then Hughes collecting players and building another huge squad, its clearly helped make his decision a little easier. The CEO cannot play football manager and its difficult to interfere, but he must be looking at the money wasted and hopefully shares these concerns with the next candidate.

For me, I think McDonald will be given a few games and if we see improvement will get it until the end of the season. Anyone coming in now has to work with a bloated squad, created to use a certain style of play/formation.

That said, I do think with the right person in charge this squad is good enough to challenge for promotion. Yes, a couple of exits/additions required in January but its not a bad squad by any means.

Yeh recruitment is a mixed bag. I am still hopeful of a few as early days.

    Taylor - looks shite
    Afoka - looks shite
    Oyegoke - looks shite/average/ok
    Tomkinson - no opinion
McDonald - slow start but hopeful
Tulloch - hopeful as early days
Wilson - hopeful as early days
    Richards - showed glimpses/ok
    Oduor - showed glimpses/ok
    Pattison - decent

Pattison is a good recruit and if we had recruited a suitable replacement for Critchlow & Banks, decent back up for Cook, competition for Lewis and a new left back, then I think our recruitment would have improved the squad. Quality over quantity.

Instead we got a total scatter gun approach, trying to fix bits of the team that weren't the slightest bit broken.

So far, Alex Pattison has proved to be the best of the above list; hopefully, he will be back, fully fit, before too long, as he is one of our most influential players.

As for the others on your list:

Rayhaan Tulloch is one of the most comfortable two footed players I've seen playing for City. He's very raw and has a lot to learn, but I think he could develop into a very good player.

Adam Wilson also looks useful and, for me, was our best player on Tuesday evening.

Kevin McDonald looks to have a great footballing brain and his ability to pick out a long pass is probably the best we've got at City. Yes, there are question marks over his fitness, but he still has something to offer as a player. If I were him, I'd stick myself on the bench (as a sub) tomorrow.

I'm still not sure about Lewis Richards, Clarke Oduor and Jonathan Tomkinson, but all three could yet have a part to play in any late promotion challenge.

As for Ash Taylor, Chisom Afoka and Daniel Oyegoke, unless any of them improve dramatically, then I cannot see them contributing much outwith the EFL Trophy matches.

I really dont understand the fawning over Steve Evans. He got promoted with Stevenage, great did well, but Adams did with Morecambe. And apart from what he did with Rotherham a decade ago he hasnt really done anything else apart from taking 4 attempts to get Crawley into the FL.

He was a disaster at Leeds, Posh, Mansfield and Gillingham. If the club were to appoint him and he continued the trend of management failure it would turn nuclear.

That’s the thing that pisses me off about all the Evans thing.
People regularly cite other managers failures at some clubs as the reason we don’t want them(Wellens)
Yet all of Evans’ previous failures are completely ignored because he got Stevenage promoted last year.

Where was this magic potion that Evans supposedly possesses when he was at Leeds,Posh,Mansfield and Gillingham?

If there were any managers watching that game yesterday that were previously on the fence about whether to apply or not and are either still on the fence or have made their mind up not to bother, then they definitely weren't the one for us anyway. When VP is rocking, there are few places better to be on a Saturday afternoon. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

Not that surprising. Always want to give people time but there were zero signs or reasons for him to stay around. Tragic team to watch.

Kevin McDonald's Bradford army! (For now).

The problems that go deeper is there is no deeper.

There's no depth anywhere within the club.

The pitiful effort in the play-offs should have been the end and not the beginning of the end. Had Hughes gone then it would have been a better time to be looking for his successor. Fortunately there are good options out there looking for their next opportunity. And Bradford City is a very attractive vacancy.

    Good shout.

Get someone in to be part of the recruitment process on a short-term basis as a consultant. Could be a few thousand quid very well spent.

Everyone wanted it to work out, no fan sees a managerial appointment and thinks to themselves, oh I hope we play terribly and really struggle while he's here.
