I’m happy to bore , but not off. He needs to go, IF we are going to have a completely new footballing side to the club. Than includes Gent and Truman like it or not.

Final thoughts on Hughes from one of his fiercest longtime critics. The one word I'd use to sum up his tenure is brainless. So much of what happened at VP defied logic or rationality. The recruitment, loans, formations, long contracts, substitutions, all the negative aspects of his time with us that have been very well documented by several people on here, never seemed to make any sense at all. I gave up on him a long, long time ago, but even so it's always sad when a manager leaves us. I wish him well.
I never bought into the view that his stellar career as a player was an advantage to us - history is littered with similar illustrious failures. You rarely see a great player become a great manager. So I'd give serious consideration to Mike Williamson. Or certainly someone younger and more ambitious.King Cole, Parader, simons (woking bantam) and 2 others like this. -
Gills kept hold of Harris because they saw something in him. That’s why he was n’t sacked. They invested with him. Ironically despite their current points total he is now under pressure because they can’t score.
I don’t know how anyone could see anything in Hughes. It was Cook and Lewis who got us in the playoffs. Without them we would have had a mid table finish and that’s where we were going this season. Sacking managers as often as we do is not the recipe for success but if a club appoints a wrong un, it’s crazy to keep him because we don’t like sacking managers. It’s not that we have just started badly and we are 18th, it’s bigger than that. His home wins in 40 odd games, the fact that other managers constantly out coach him, his recruitment, his budget, the number of players, the switch to 5 at the back and back to 4, the cautious style, the lack of energy, the substitutions, not knowing what his best team was, the fact that a few thousand ST holders choose to stay away because of the lack of passion, excitement, hope and that it’s boring. The list is endless. -

No back up GK & we're totally reliant on one Centre Forward.

For whatever reason, we gave Hughes carte blanche to recruit as he wanted in order to play in his preferred style whether that was appropriate to the lower leagues or not. We are now looking for a new manager who may well have a very different approach and will struggle to implement his style with our current crop of players. That means a number of things in the short term. Some managers may have to be ruled out altogether. Alternatively either round pegs will have to play in square holes or the manager will have to adopt a different style to his favoured one on which his reputation has been built. Neither of those are at all ideal. Unless we are to continue with the Hughes approach, some serious rebuilding of the squad is going to be required.Inspector, borderlescott, Dubois and 2 others like this. -

Guys I thought Adams would have done us a job as well as Hughes. There is something we are fighting against evert week is big club mentality that other teams love playing against us...... Basically most teams are on a par but what gets you through is effort and enjoying the moment. Most teams love playing against us especially at home. Barrow year was a great example , they murdered us with effort and heart. No team at this level is going to let you play willingly to your strengths. (Cheers Newport.) You need to earn that. It's now the same for Wrexham everyone loves to beat them as with us. I think Wilson is a good player who will get better as a winger. Tulloch is being played out of position and on the wing he should be. Oyegoke is not midfielder it all passes him by. Oh playing out from the back only works now and again if they give you space with good players ... ,we haven't and most dont so dont do it

Clearly Hughes could also see the issues but believed his way was correct and they could be resolved within that system.Rudie, Wakefield Bantam, Onside and 2 others like this. -

I think it was probably time for Hughes to go, but I'm completely uninspired that Macdonald has taken temporary charge. The writing has been on the wall long enough for us to have put a plan in place.

Nothing joyful about this at all. I wanted nothing more than Hughes to be successful and I’m gutted for us (club and supporters) and him that it didn’t work.
I feel pretty empty about the whole topic and placing a player with zero dugout experience (not disrespect to Macdonald) however short a time it lasts, makes me doubt the leadership level at the club even more.
Genuine question - what level of manager do we realistically think we can afford/attract??Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Chrisako, Kopendin1964, Budgie and 1 other person like this. -

A song for poor old mark on Saturday
Standing in the door
Of the Players tunnel
Crying in the rain
It was a kind of so-so love
And I'm gonna make sure
It never happens again
You and I, it had to be
The standing joke of the year
You were a mega star
Way above us by far
And not for me I fear
We tried to make it work
You in a home dug out
And me in the Kop
Well, it just wasn't me
You're used to spending more
And now your team's a bore
So insecure you seem
I put up with all the crap
And this is one crap
That's going to be played my way
