Having read the responses to Richie Smallwood’s sending off and watched the replays, then the following issues come to mind:
    • The tackle was wholly unnecessary. We were two up and it happened in the centre of the pitch.
    • There was no obvious goal threat.
    • It was clearly a dangerous tackle and merited a card.
    • Most on here accept it was a red card incident.
    • The sending off put the team under immense pressure and was a major factor in leading to the defeat.
    • With a three match ban at this stage of the season, the longer term implications are potentially very serious.
Richie is a bit of a marmite character. His stay with the club has divided supporters and it is only this season that many have (had?) been won over.

Clearly it wont be just down to this sending off if we miss out on promotion (the poor away form has done that), but it is a dramatic development.

Many footballers, take the money and remain silent. Richie Smallwood is the captain, he should set an example to other players, as well as marshalling the team and supporting individual players.

Previous captains have had a greater public presence. Smallwood apart from berating referees (how many actually change their mind, how many does that irritate) often seems lacking as a role model/spokesperson.

Perhaps a bit of humility wouldn’t go amiss. I think it would help if he apologised to the fans!

Richie just say that you are sorry and mean it! If you want a legacy which means something, then ‘getting the Supporters onside’ is an important factor.

The ‘do nothing/say nothing’ approach potentially alienates many, suggests that you are arrogant, and couldn’t really care about anyone other than your self. As the Americans say, ‘time to man up’!

Jeez Rod move on. He got it wrong and he knows it. Don't need a public apology or flogging, it's football, shit happens.

We dont have time for this now, whats happened has happened, time to move on..

We have 4 massive games coming up where we need at least 8 points, and no silly distractions about a sending off in a previous game. All Ritchie has to do is be in the dugout supporting the lads (if he can).

We can deal with any fallout once the seasons over..

Im with you here, sorry @Bigrod@Bigrod , but public apologies aren’t needed for me , especially ones that, well somehow try to “make it go away “…..It won’t . What’s done is done , we are where we are. I’m pretty much sure he knows without doubt what he’s done , and the potential impact ? He will have had a word with his manager and team mates, post game , of that we can sure . Sometimes, we and players no doubt, have to move on . A public apology could just invite further unhealthy ridicule and “pile ons” , which may have the opposite effect of that first intended.
His best role going forward for the next number of games will be publicly supporting his colleagues during games , just like Cookie has done throughout his injury. He’s still captain , one despite his sending off, so should be proud of his season and his role in our promotion challenge thus far. One bad incident won’t take that away . We move on.

I find some of the responses a bit over the top!

I guess we live in a world where few accept responsibility for their behaviour and the ripples which then occur.

No he shouldn’t be ‘shamed’, just be mature enough to admit he got it wrong.

I guess we all have a different take on it.

Forget about it, it's old news now.

We have a massive match in 3 days time and that has to be the focus, not dwelling on Saturday.

At the end of the day it's swings and roundabouts, yes we lost in the dying seconds and we could debate until the cows come home whose fault it was but we've also won matches in the latter stages (most recently Salford springs to mind) and as always it's on to the next, especially at this crucial stage of the season.

    Time to move on.

It's part of the game, I don't think a 'Sorry' speech wont make much go away or improve much morale and lingering on the situation doesn't help the squad. We all move on, it's happened, next man up and go again.

Someone else's chance now to step up.

I am not sure what role a public apology serves tbh. What we need from Richie now is that he captains the squad off field as someone has said, that is enough. I am sure he has apologised to the management team and the players. They were the ones who had to play with 10 men for 60+ minutes and will now have to play without him. When you are tired as all our players were, your decision making starts to deteriorate.

Yes it has turned up the anxiety for fans but an apology will not make that go away. If he can instill confidence and self belief in the players for next Thursday night, that would be great and we achieve a win, then that will lesson the anxiety for the next three matches.

I don't expect players to apologise publicly for incidents which happened during the game. Smallwood will understand fully the implications of his sending off and I'd be surprised if he hasn't already apologised in some way to his teammates and his manager for this. But these things happen in football which is a contact sport and there's little point in dwelling on it. The squad has to prepare for the next game without being concerned about what happened in the previous games.

Better to focus on what to learn from the game. If I were the manager, I'd want to get behind why we gave away two goals in the closing seconds of the two halves. Did they switch off? Were they in panic mode? Were they exhausted? Both are things which could happen again when the opponents apply more pressure at the end. They're far more likely to reoccur than a hard tackle leading to a sending off.

Whats over the top is someone asking for a public apology which will make absolutely no difference to anything other than make a few snowflakes happy. I'm sorry but the pile on of Smallwood from some this weekend has been embarrassing, the lad has bust a gut for us all season, he's got more than enough credit in the bank.

Did I get the subs wrong? That's what I'd be asking myself if I was GA and the answer would be a resounding YES!

Absolutely pathetic post. The bloke made an error of judgement in a high pressured sporting environment. He isn't the first and there'll be more over the Easter weekend. It's done and forgotten and the only focus should be about Thursday, not ridiculous demands for apologies.

I think that’s taken for granted now. It’s a repeat of the MH Carlisle play off debacle, bring defenders on , unfamiliar with the multi defence formulae, sit back and hope we can defend our way through.

5-3-1 should have been the way forward with the two wing backs joining in with the back 3 but staying wide to counter crosses coming in.

He made a mistake it happens :( the people that should be sorry is the folk that couldnt keep the ball out of the net 5 times :(

The man must be in bits at the moment and the only way t get him through is to make sure that come the Fleetwood game he doesnt feel as half as bad as he does at the moment.

Fook me last thing we need is yet another petty witchhunt because that always turns out well doesnt it ??,

You are a top poster Rod and usually agree with you, however, on this occasion I disagree.

We need to move on and concentrate on the last 4 games now.

Smallwood has been our most consistent performer this season and arguably our player of the season. He has no need to apologise. He made a mistake, move on.

If you think Smallwood needs to apologise, do the defence need to do so for not holding on to the 4-3 going into injury time, of course not in my opinion.

We need to get behind all the players and management like never before, including Smallwood when he is available to play again, and help the team to get over the line.

You know what loses you games more than red cards? Conceding goals, maybe we should demand apologies from the two that scored an own goal, or the whole defence for conceding at all? Or maybe we accept they make mistakes while performing their job as we all do and move on.

We fail to go up it wont be down to just Smallwood it will be down to other things and i think lady luck will have a big say in it sadly.
The loss of 3 major players at the same time when we looked like walking this league.
    Cooks injury.
    The Salford no goal ?????

Hope we are sat here in a few weeks time and the job is done and we aint looking back at individual errors we simply win ALL out matches and we are out of this league so lets get that job done and thats all that concerns me now
