Well, far be it from me to be one of the most positive posters, but having watched that, I feel that the performance today was better than what I expected. Yes we're definitely lacking in pace and quality up front, but i thought in general, we looked more organised and hard working than we have for a while.

Staunton and Watt look pretty good, Staunton assured and carries the ball, Watt has a good range of passing. Thought we worked hard as a team, definitely had the better chances to nick it. Cant believe I'm saying tjis, but I thought Clarke looked very good today! Most of our better build up play came through him.

A big few weeks coming up, if Rupp is stating that there's money available, then at least 1 striker with pace and quality needs bringing in, along with another CM for cover. If we bring in 3 or 4 more with quality, then there's a fair bit to be positive about

Don't know how everyone else feels this morning, but it certainly doesn't feel like the first day of a new league campaign. That excitement and anticipation of walking to the ground this afternoon sadly missing.

I hope we get off to a good start to the season in the coming few weeks, otherwise interest in this strange season will quickly wane I fear.

A love in with Colchester's academy? Nonsense. But I can admire what other clubs do from which we could learn if we wanted to.

What Colchester did was to change their approach and invest for the future. They spent around £2m upgrading their academy's facilities and are currently spending over £1m each season on scouting, coaching and development of younger players. That enabled their academy to be upgraded to Cat 2. They are investing consistently and methodically for the future rather than simply gambling on unearthing somebody. Whether their approach is successful can only be judged in future seasons. But at least they have a vision and a plan for their own future, something we've talked about but have done very little to deliver on.

If we need 3 or 4 with more quality it hardly says much about the current squad. Games hinge on chances, if Novak takes that one first half we have a different game on our hands.

We didn't play that badly but we are were the home team and need to produce more.

The problems we all knew issues and they haven't been addressed. We lack pace and our attack is weak.

They have a very well regarded academy. The club spent a lot of money updating the training infrastructure and improving the coaching set-up. It was awarded Cat 2 status 3-4 years ago. Ours is the lower Cat 3 in line with many other lower league clubs.

Their investment is now beginning to pay off. Their Academy's Under 23 team play in the Professional Development league alongside PL and Championship teams. It's something we can only dream about.

Well that will be an improvement on Stuart's previous spell at VP. ;)

A friend of mine, Colchester season ticket holder, isn’t so positive about the prospects of the season ahead. However on paper and based on last season they should be solid so today is a tough start for both teams IMO.

I simply want us to have a go at teams this season. I don’t care if its not pretty at times which lets be realistic, at league two level it wont be. I want to watch games with some sort of optimism that we can challenge the opposition and make them think, rather than witness the predictable dross we have been served up the past few seasons. I want to see the players giving their all, enjoying their football and playing for this club and above all, give us as supporters something to identify in and get excited for on match days. If we get even some of the above, it’s an improvement on last season which is the non-negotiable we should expect.

Commentators kept going on about how well DMH was doing. FFS, he's supposed to be a winger but I can't remember one occasion when he took on the fullback, beat him and got a cross in. Just kept turning back and playing the ball inside or backwards.

Quite simply "Stuart has certainly freshened up the squad, which is packed full of talent, and has funds available should he feel the need to further strengthen before the transfer window closes next month".

I'd expect Billy Clarke to start.
Doesn't look like they have any tall forwards either so would expect Staunton to keep his spot over BRE.
Ismail should be fit but only from the bench along with DMH.

In other words, unchanged from Bolton game

We all understand the kid has pace but not once did he take his full back on, your right we are not privy to what goes on at training or before a game but surely when your manager is bigging you up with regards pace if that's your biggest asset you use it, I believe Stuart said French was the fastest in training the other week but that was only because DMH was out injured.
We heard Bowyer telling us what a class act Ismail would be, now he only had 13 minutes to show us in his cameo but he offered nothing, and IMO he didn't look interested.

There was not enough drive from midfield. Cooke was way off the pace and i lost count how many times he gave the ball away with sloppy passes.
I thought the defence coped quite well against a team that made the playoffs and Staunton looks very promising.
They had pace to spare , but rarely hurt us with it.
The less said about the forwards the better, Novak should have burried that first half chance. How ofren have we said that , over the past seasons. Six out of ten , improvement needed.
