When the trial was happening I thought it was strange that the defence hardly put a case at all. Think they did less than half a day with only one witness, if that. That said to me that they didn’t think the evidence was very strong. Emotional yes but actually lacking evidence to point the finger at him.

A new trial is due to start in Preston on 7th October. If it goes for 10 weeks again it will be just before Christmas when the verdict is decided.

Example when I had my prostrate surgery my consultant who operated on me had to have a mentor at his side during the operation just in case anything went wrong, once he had done x amount of operations then he would be allowed to do operations by himself. -
One of the reasons they opened the gate was because fans where climbing the walls into the ground so the fans without tickets saw what others were doing resulting in a crush at the turnstiles. So they took the decision to open the gate basically being a free for all with or without tickets.

Whether they played enough of a part to apportion blame though is a completely different debate. -

Judge Openshaw said Mackrell’s offence did not directly cause the disaster inside the ground.
He said: “The defendant’s offence was at least one of the direct causes of the crush at the turnstiles outside the ground but it was not a direct cause of the crush on the terraces inside the ground that resulted in the deaths of 96 spectators and injury to many more, to which the crush outside the ground did no more than set the scene.” -
The biggest query should be on the current CPS for dragging it out if no evidence of an actual crime had been committed. I suppose they would have been crucified if they had dropped the case so they carried on just to keep face and can blame the judge, what a waste of money
