I've just finished reading a book by Jonathan Wilson, 'Inverting The Pyramid: The History of Soccer Tactics'. Found it to be a very insightful read and certainly one of the best footy books I've read. Basically covers the world history of tactics, from your modern pioneers (the obvious house hold names, but also others completely new to me) right back to the beginning, where such luminaries as herbert chapman essentially reinvented a game where previously chaos reigned. Wilson takes a look at the lives of the great players and thinkers who shaped the game, and discovers why the English in particular have proved themselves so “unwilling to grapple with the abstract.”
Alot of people say football and literature do not usually make good bedfellows, but I would beg to differ. I've read some cracking footy books in my time.
Another one being 'Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football', and 'Provided you don't kiss me', an intimate warts and all biography of the great Brian Clough, i thought was hilarious. Written by long suffering Duncan Hamilton a Nottingham journalist who spent 20 years working alongside Cloughie and was naturally privy to the great man's idiosyncrasies for better and worse.
