I hope the person is caught and banned for life. I also hope the club reach out to the little girl who is too scared to go again invite her and her family to the next home game and give them the VIP treatment. She shouldn't miss out on a lifetime of memories and bonding with family and friends because of the idiotic act of 1 person.

I think the club is well within its rights to decide they do not want people who do this sort of thing in their ground.Bigrod, Jayteebee, Wolfysmith and 8 others like this. -

The only thing I have to question is people asking for a lifetime ban. A touch Draconian me thinks. Yes it's an idiotic thing to do but if a culprit is found then a few years ban and educating on why we at Bradford find 'smoke bombs'so abhorrent. Pyrotechnics are a major part of European football and to be fair do look spectacular. But we have a unique history, one which dictates these devices should never set foot in Valley Parade.

I took my granddaughter to the game on Saturday and when the flare went off she asked what is and I explained. The smoke drifted and could be smelt in the Main Stand and she was worried, but I just explained it had drifted across the pitch.
She shouldn’t have to be concerned about smoke at a football match, particularly after we had stopped to look at the memorial before kick off.
Let’s hope that’s the first and last time this happens by our supporters at Valley Parade or anywhere else for that matter.Chippy, borderlescott, Idlebantam and 5 others like this. -

However, when it comes to throwing pyros at other people, I take a different and tougher line. The matter should be passed onto the police as a criminal matter. Flares burn in excess of 1200 degrees! Even the reasonably common smoke bombs burn at 200-300 degrees and can still do enormous damage to another person. Imagine something like that connecting with bare skin. The punishment for those involved in throwing a smoke bomb in a crowded area which could hit another person requires much more than a banning order.Jayteebee, Wolfysmith, Bronco and 4 others like this. -
I know, for example, that at clubs in Spain where there are very clearly defined "ultras" sections those going into those sections are checked far more stringently than the cursory check done elsewhere in the ground. Maybe we need to consider likewise for the Kop Upper?
I've also seen people complaining that no stewards went to the area the pyro was thrown from afterwards - what would have been the point? The numpties there would have closed ranks, probably started giving the steward a load of grief and started one of their witty "£2 an hour" chants.
Football crowds have to be self-policing when someone steps out of line like they have here.Jayteebee, Wolfysmith, Kevin1954 and 4 others like this. -
No one in this day or age, or any other age, should attend a sporting event where they is any risk to their health and safety. Yet someone has clearly decided that should not be the case and has wilfully and indiscriminately endangered others. It's obvious that most, if not all, those people who stand or sit around the culprit simply don't have the guts to step forward and do the right thing, probably because they are cowardly, easily influenced and fearful of breaking ranks. It is my hope that one of them is brave enough to show some humanity and identify the culprit but sadly, these idiots don't have the balls because they follow the pack and can't think or act for themselves.

Hope the t@wat is found and banned, probably should be arrested if you chucked something like that at someone in the street or at a copper I doubt they’d be looked kindly on.

It came completely out of the blue and landed among people in the lower kop. Utter madness. You can't imagine what sort of moron would do that. Someone must have seen whoever did it. I traced the trajectory backwards as it left a trail in the air and it came from about the middle of L block, a bit towards the Midland Road side. Hope CCTV pick it up.

Someone knows something and they should come forward, the sooner these idiots are banned the better for me.

Firstly the club has rules, they state:-
- 7 The following articles must not be brought within the Ground - knives, Illegal Substances, fireworks, smoke canisters, air-horns, flares, weapons, dangerous or hazardous items, laser devices, bottles, glass vessels, cans, poles and any article that might be used as a weapon and/or compromise public safety. Any person in possession of such items will be refused entry to the Ground.
- 11 The following acts are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991 (as amended):11.1 the throwing of any object within the Ground without lawful authority or excuse.
https://www.bradfordcityafc.com/siteassets/ground-regulations-2223_clean.pdf
The Terms and Conditions of Entry, give the club the power to:- ‘
8.2. Without prejudice to any other remedies it may have the Club may in its absolute discretion suspend the use of your Season Ticket in circumstances where the Club have reason to believe that you have behaved in a manner which is contrary to the Club or any other club’s rules or regulations and/or is deemed by the Club to have brought the Club into disrepute.
https://www.bradfordcityafc.com/siteassets/st2223tandcs.pdf
So the power rests with the club to in effect ‘ban’ anyone who has been identified as in breach of the rules.
What is not set out is the length of ban, or what has to happen for the club to lift the suspension!
Personally a ‘lifetime’ ban seems unduly draconian, especially if it is a first incident. I would prefer that there was some form of assessment that the individual was truly remorseful, that they had developed an insight as to what was wrong with their behaviour. Perhaps a series of interviews, a written apology to the victims, and any return to the club being on ‘licence’. Any further incident would lead to the possibility of the equivalent of several years ban.
As indicated above the second leg is in the hands of the Police. Having said that they need evidence to identify a suspect. That could entail CCTV and Witness statements from those who saw something relevant to the incident. The statements should come from supporters and importantly Stewards, who are employed by the club to promote and ensure safety.
If the club has insufficient CCTV, in an area where the potential for such incidents is more likely, then it has to review its measures. The same goes for the Stewards. Are they communicating with each other, identifying the potential for incidents. Is the CCTV remote or actively monitored by a controller who could perhaps increase scrutiny?
If the individual were charged and brought to court and subsequently convicted they could (as I understand it) face a custodial sentence up to six months. Additionally a Banning Order could be added, ‘Where the order is imposed in addition to a sentence of immediate imprisonment, the term of the order must be between six and ten years’. Even if a custodial tariff were not employed, they would face the prospect of a Football Banning Order, ‘the term of the order must be between three and five years’. I would hope some form of compensation payment to those who were directly affected by the incident and a Community Service Order https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/explanatory-material/magistrates-court/item/ancillary-orders/14-football-banning-orders/
So in conclusion even if the individual was not convicted in a criminal court (beyond reasonable doubt), but the club, felt on the balance of probability, that they had satisfactory evidence, then I would guess that a ban of at least three years, possibly up to five years, would be on the cards.Inspector, Rogered Tart, Petrov and 2 others like this. -
