Favourite keeper Tomlinson - may not have been the best we’ve had but was to me as a 9 year old.
Best keeper would be one of Clarke or Schwarzer.

Eric McManus was the first keeper I really remember.
Mark Schwarzer and Gary Walsh were top drawer.

But would say Matt Clarke was my favourite

On the day Jon's father, Bobby Gould, was interviewed on the pitch by some hapless reporter. She said something like, 'You must be so proud of your son playing in this famous stadium. Have you ever been here before?' He replied, 'I scored in the 1969 League Cup final.'

Matt Clarke easily the best ive seen between the City ticks these last 30 years. He was England quality for a season.

Schwarzer was the one that got away though. He went on to the best bar none. Better than Pickford so far IMO.

The best performance I’ve ever seen for a City keeper was Schwarzer on his debut at Charlton 96-97. He was outstanding. Charlton had chance after chance when we were 1-0 up for Waddle then score a superb 2nd sucker punch.

The best save I’ve seen a City keeper make was Aidan Davison be Wolves 96-97. Steve Bull shot, Davison made a great save only for the ball to fall straight to Iwan Roberts 6 yards out. Somehow Davison managed to recover and tip it over the bar. Unbelievable.

However my favourite City keeper since 84-85 is Gary Walsh. Yes he made the odd howler but he had the defence organised and his command of the area was second to none.

    One for the old gimmers.
    Anybody remember Alan Coombe ?
Played for us from 2002 to 2004.
Imo he was a decent keeper.

Does anyone remember Mitchell Downie? When I watched him as a kid, I thought he was the best keeper in the world - but he probably wasn't! Since then, I think Matt Clarke has impressed me the most, not only for us but I also remember him being outstanding when he played against us for Rotherham.

No contest for me either, Peter Downsborough without any doubt.

This is what The Times writer wrote about Swindon Town's League Cup final triumph of 1969: "it was Downsborough versus Arsenal and Downsborough won."

By the time they let him come to City 1974, Swindon obviously thought his best days were over; how wrong they were. Downsborough helped, almost single-handedly at times, City to an FA Cup quarter final appearance in 1976 and promotion in 1977.

He was also something of a penalty specialist and was rarely beaten from the spot.

His final appearance for City was in a 6-0 win over Crewe Alexandra on 28 April 1978.

Edit: I believe this is the photo of him coming onto the pitch for the Crewe match, with both teams forming a guard of honour:

    Walsh or Schwarzer for me.

had some good ones since. Clarke for that season. Henderson and Ricketts had their moments of brilliance too.

    Recent years have been questionable…..

For entertainment value undoubtedly Donovan Ricketts, twice MLS goalie of the year. Good in his first season, but then increasingly ricket prone!

Pickford falls into the same category as Mark Schwarzer for me, you could see they were both going to play at the top level but did not play enough games for Braford City to quote the best IMO.

@Bronco@Bronco, do you recall Bernard Fisher? At The Shay, must have been 1963/64 ish, he made a fantastic triple save from a Halifax penalty in the closing minutes, to ensure us a win. Lives long in the memory. Pushed it out twice and then, whilst on the ground, punched the next rebound over the bar. I've never seen a better sequence of saves from a City 'keeper.

He played over 150 games for Hull City too. And according to Wiki, Bernard's still alive, aged 87. Hope someone can find some way of getting this little exchange to him so he's knows he's still very much remembered. Any thoughts?

We did indeed! The train back from Halifax was rocking that night. A never to be forgotten sequence of saves.
I think Bernard joined City around the same time as Dudley Price, also from Hull. I was at Belle Vue at the time, but spent more time in Norman's cafe, Venezia Coffee Bar and the sweet shop next to the school. Bernard and Dudley used to call in the shop regularly, before, or after training, so we got to know them well. They were never too busy to not stay and have a chat with us kids. It would be great if he got to learn that his exploits are still remembered.

    Got a few favourites TBH:

McManus for the 84/85 promotion season.

Tomlinson for the 87/88 nearly season but WHY did he pick the ball up twice V Luton in the cup-never understood that

Gould for the 96 promotion season

Walsh for the 99/00 promotion season

First one I really remember is Tommo, so he’s my favourite. Best...did Pickford play enough games to be considered, given what he’s gone on to? As said before, same for Schwarzer - longevity (for now) probably steals it for him.

I always thought schwartzer was bought to sell quickly, and we never intended keeping him.
