That was always the most likely outcome, unfortunately.

The feeling that we have few attacking options is a big problem for us. It shows just how much work is left to do after last season. I know we've signed a strong first XI and a few options, and injuries have hampered us, but if you look at the fat we're still carrying:

Doyle's wages
McCartan
Patrick
Anderson
Devine
Gibson

We could do much better than this - it's a shame about Devitt, Reeves, Donaldson, Riley, and the others out injured who would likely feature, but dismantling the squad that did so badly last season hasn't been easy.

Full credit to Bowyer for making a squad around that dross that can compete at the top in League Two. Now we either need a bit of luck with returning players or some wheeling and dealing in January to reinforce the team and get us promoted.

One thing is for sure, simply bringing Doyle back is almost certainly not the answer alone.

 

Is McCarten injured?

 

Yes could be back at the weekend.

 

Disappointing result. Beating a team from league one might actually boost confidence to take into our league campaign? As others say, must follow this up with a decent result or two in the league. Fair play to shrews, home to Mansfield, decent chance of the third round and maybe a money spinner, not something we evidently need these days.

 

Could do with some kind of contribution from Shay soon. Aside from the Swindon goal this season seems to be passing him by

 

Well, what a bizare game, two piss poor sides we shaved it first half and should have gone in1 - 0 up.
Continued in much the same vain second half a goal either way wins the game, nowt of a ball knocked into our box we don't deal with it and Edwards who had come on 10 minutes earlier scores.
What was disappointing was we go a goal down and we looked to have given the game up, the suba made no sense at all.
The only winners tonight besides Shrewsbury were the fans who stayed at home.

 

Without doubt we struggled without a lad who could battle in an areial duel with Beckles& Williams, as @bantam2708 says Vaughan had a helpless task tonight.

 

Whatever way you want to look at it, fact is we're out of all cups by November and we've had 4 home cup ties and lost them all. Stefan can't be happy with that considering he wanted a cup run.

Don't need to fight fire with fire Bronco, we didn't miss donaldson today. A blind man could've seen that the tactic of high crosses was idiotic and played straight into Shrewsbury's hands, yet we just don't have a plan B.

For those whom went tonight, do you think the style of play would have benefited Doyle?

No, tonight Doyle would've been useless as would aguero and ronaldo given the fact we created one chance all game. And the team has the ability to create chances for doyle if only Bowyer released the shackles a bit and allowed him to be a goalscorer and didn't expect much else from him.

 

I thought Shrewsbury controlled the game once they took the lead, not because they were the better side but to me our heads went down and that can't be tolerated, past teams would have gone for it with the time left, we had nothing to lose.

 

Reeves isn't superman. Nearly 2 years out mate. Can't you get your head round that.

Where was Taylor? Danny for Akpan makes no sense though.

You must be a minority of purists, then, because I've heard an awful lot of moaning about how we're unable to shut a game down this season alone.

Unfortunately getting into a winning position and then shutting the game down is all about that kind of gamesmanship.

If we can keep him fit from now until end of season Reeves quality will show through and like you say Dave he now just needs the game time to build up.
