The games still in our hands, we can only lose it by making silly calls, plenty of time left there should be no weather problems just take the singles until the bad ball comes then dispatch it over the boundary rope.

As Boycott said the other day little between them.

Is it time to rest(drop) Bairstow?

    The right answer is yes.
    Not sure they will though.

    Yes.

Foakes is the better wicket keeper in my opinion.

Bring in Dan Lawrence too to bat at 3. Brooks needs to stay at 5.

We've got a very good pool of seamers now, however, lacking a Spin bowler that comes anywhere close to Nathan Lyons

Since Jonny is in such a rich vein of dropping and failing to score runs then it should be a yes but no doubt Stokes will keep him.(pun intended)

Thankful that Wood's pace and Woakes added some much needed energy and the aussie's looked tired and not having Lyons, resting Hazlewood and Green helps.
Broad doesn't need a rest though does he? *
Anderson back for the next test
Not much spin then probably no Moeen

    * wee Davey Warner and his sandpaper would disagree

That was great cricket to watch yesterday. Can’t wait for the next match.

Without a shadow of a doubt. Not only would Foakes massively improve the wicket-keeping, he would probably improve our batting as well. Bairstow looks overweight and badly out of form with bat and gloves. But he seems to be one of the chosen Bazball few so I strongly suspect he'll keep his place,
I also suspect that Anderson will come back in to replace Robinson, despite his modest test record at Old Trafford. I'd rather see Josh Tongue come in and us play Moen Ali at 3.

Agree about Bairstow. He did very well to be functional for the Ashes, but the fine edge of being match fit is lacking. Not so sure about Ali’s batting tbh. Not consistent enough for me. Plus his bowling is nowhere as good as Leach. Like Bairstow he is popular but not up to scratch.

But he's the best spinning option we've got. He took two vital wickets in the Aussie second innings at Headingley. I don't think we'll go into the next test just relying on Root as a spinner.
I read today that Ali has started spending time in the nets against the new ball, so I think he'll bat at 3 in Manchester. He's done it lots in county cricket. He has the necessary technique but because he's only played white ball cricket for the last few years he needs practice to rediscover his broader test game. And to be fair, the ball that got him on Sunday was a Jaffa.

I know everyone rates him but I don’t. Do you think he is a better bowler than Leach?

He's probably a better attacking option when the wicket is turning, but not so good at just holding one end up economically. But it's immaterial at the moment. Leach is out injured for the whole series, which is why Mo was shipped in out of test retirement as an emergency replacement.

In some ways Englands loyalty to players is refreshing and their refusal to knee jerk is non existent but I think when there are other players to choose it doesn’t make sense to me. If a player is struggling leaving him in there will only harm his confidence in my view.

I wouldn’t have kept Robinson in the team either. He has a back problem and they do not know whether he will break down or not.
I would go with Jimmy Broad Woakes either Ali or that young spinner who played against NZ if fit. Tongue would be good if we are going with 5 bowlers which I think we can do with Woakes in there as an all rounder.

    Seconded!
Wood and Woakes brought some much needed energy to England and with some time off i expect the aussies to come back hard at Old Trafford with Hazlewood back and Cummins/Starc rested up.
McCullum is looking at Moeen at the three spot but i must jinx him as everytime i watch him live he will make a scratchy 20 and then be out.
Lawrence is in the squad but i am more impressed with a discarded player- Alex Lees who is having a great season with Durham and runs aside, it is his strike rate that is eye-catching, been told to go away and improve and has done.
Another lefty and a better fit for number three spot imo (today is 184 not out from 212 balls currently)

Simply no excuses for keeping Bairstow in the team when out of form catching and batting.
Wood,Woakes,Broad,Anderson as the bowling attack please and anytime Stokes wants to get fully fit will be fine with me.

I'd prefer Wood, Woakes, Broad and Tongue myself. Jimmy has been well below his best this summer, even in helpful conditions, and his record in tests at Old Trafford is modest. Tongue was the pick of our quicks in the second test and shouldn't have been dropped for Robinson at Headingley in my opinion. His extra pace alongside Wood gives us better options I reckon
