So it seems Mr Trump has some very good accountants. How on earth can he be allowed to do an Amazon and pay virtually no federal taxes.

Read that in 1 year he got a £79m tax rebate.

So it seems he is up to his ears, $300 million, in personal loans that fall due soon and yet makes huge losses on his golf courses (allegedly).

This is going to absolutely kill his chances of getting a 2nd term.

    He is a busted flush.

    Not necessarily, unfortunately.

It's perfectly obvious that the man is a total charlatan. He claims to be a self-made 'master of the deal' but he's been living on credit, tax dodges and bailouts all his life. His dad funded all his early business deals and his profligate lifestyle and bailed him out of millions of dollars of debt. He inherited multi millions and yet has declared bankruptcy several times, leaving creditors in ruins. He's a useless businessman and a crook to boot.

But, his faithful supporters will forgive him anything - sexual abuse; blatant lies; overt racism; collusion with foreign governments (amounting to treason) for personal gain; and wholesale tax fraud - as long as he resists gun control, scapegoats immigrants and rolls back abortion rights. Many of them see any form of taxation as tantamount to evil so will actually applaud his success at evading it for so long.

The only hope is that enough swing voters will be horrified and motivated to vote against him.

I think it's going to get very messy. If he loses he's going to refuse to concede and falsely claim that postal voting is fraudulent. He'll drag the process out through the Supreme Court, which he has packed with ultra conservative judges who'll support him as far as they possibly can.

It won't make a difference to his hardcore supporters. But it may just influence enough swing voters to make some difference. Fingers crossed.

I think we need to look closer to home rather than worry about Trump and his tax avoidance

Indeed. It is relatively straightforward for anyone to avoid paying tax even in this country. Of course, the cost of setting up the appropriate measures outweighs the benefits for many but, for the rich, avoiding tax is fairly easy to do, if so inclined.

One of the leading lights in our tax division referred to 'paying tax as an optional activity' for those with sufficient wealth to to fund it!

Had we been staying in the EU then the two EU directives on tax avoidance (ATAD and ATAD II) would have applied to us and would have closed many of the loopholes and devices used by wealthy individuals to avoid paying UK tax. Of course now we are leaving the EU, those directives won't apply in the UK. It makes me wonder how many of those whose companies have complx ownership or domicile structures designed with one purpose in mind - to hide wealth in UK tax havens beyond sight of HMRC. Step forward the likes of Tim Martin, Richard Branson, James Ratcliffe, John Moulson, Philip Green, James Dyson and many others who have that kind of wealth. I wonder how they campaigned on Brexit to avoid becoming subject to the ATADs?

Yes, that's ATAD II. Very catchy titles.

Together with the original ATAD, it would have brought a lot of what some refer to as 'aggressive' tax avoidance to an abrupt end within the UK. I bet some of those on my earlier list are very pleased that those directives will now never be implemented in the UK. They'll be laughing all the way to their overseas banks!

Of course. This is the real reason why many of the Tory Party are so keen for us to 'take back control of our laws' - so they can keep squirrelling away their wealth in offshore tax havens, whilst sweeping away 'restrictive' regulations - ie the hard fought employment rights that make us a civilised modern democracy. And they've managed to con large sections of the population to go along with it. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

Suggesting I'd have been better off if I'd have voted Labour is equally laughable though. The bloke in the middle is always the one being squeezed, it really makes very little difference which side of the divide your vote falls on.

I understand why people felt they couldn't vote for Labour under Corbyn. I'll never understand why so many voted for Brexit in 2016 when it's clearly going to do them so much harm.

Whatever the situation with Trump and his taxes he will make sure it is legal, Tax crime in the USA is a major offence and very long prison sentences are given for it,
When the tax evasion details from Liechtenstein were given to the USA and UK tax authorities the USA said if proved they would go to jail for a very long time, HMRC said if UK citizens were proved to have evaded tax they would be sent a very strong letter,

I agree that the core support will remain regardless of what he says or does (can be proven to have said or done). Fingers crossed that more of those who oppose him will actually vote this time around. But getting people out seems to be a problem just about everywhere.
    - - -
On a lighter note, I don't see why he should be so worried about voter fraud. After all, given that he is so sure it exists, surely it shouldn't be beyond him, stable genius that he is, to make sure it works in his favour?

Won't change anything, he's done some very sinister stuff around data analytics and the online world and created a cult essentially. Evangelical Christians have a lot to answer for when this is all over with
