He basically said promotion takes priority and only kids that are good enough will get a chance. Those not ready wont be used to develop them in important matches.

Find me any fault in those two statements?

Another canny interview from the gaffer.

I love how he says developing youngsters to sell at the expense of staying in league 2 is a no from him and the fans.

He wants to progress this club as quickly as possible and will use experience to do so

Where's the evidence Adams isn't on board with that? Just because he doesn't feel some of the lads are good enough for the first team doesn't mean he is against us having an academy and developing players for the future.

    Maybe.

Although in recent times those "young players" are the only thing that's kept us afloat. If all of a sudden they decide there isn't a pathway then just maybe the "conveyor belt" might dry up.

I'm not saying what DA said is a bad thing, I actually agree with his stance but imo there's room for both. We can get promoted and we can develop players. It really shouldn't be a case of one or the other.

    Interesting!

Next it will be we train at a school ffs!

Adams is just what we need but I can see clashes along the way.

He isn’t going to dance about like some on here. He is going to tell it how it really is!

I'm pretty sure this isn't as big a deal as some are making out. Adams comments about the young lads that were offered their first professional contracts this season were very positive, Sparks has said we are not done yet in the transfer market. Given we have a squad of 24 now, that suggests to me that there will have to be a couple of departures to bring a couple more in. Sending a few of the young lads out on loan would be beneficial to them and to the club.
Adams comments weren't him saying he is against the development of young players, just that it can't be done to the detriment of what the club are trying to achieve on the pitch. I'm pretty sure Sparks will be in full agreement with that.

Adams is no fool he took the job knowing what the club's "Ethos" was but his and the clubs aim is promotion this season.
He's not said there won't be chances for the youth players but let's not kid ourselves Adams is not going to blow what he's been brought in to do to shoehorn these kids into the side at the expense of promotion.
Over the years there have been very few who came through the ranks and eventually were sold for big bucks, on the contrary the majority have been spotted by clubs with little or no first team experiance.
McBurie, Cleverley, Wisdom, Delph, Ombang, Green, very little first team experiance between them and the lads who were drafed in last season will have had plenty of attention from the big clubs if they thought they would make it.

The club putting money into an academy and having to play them in a first team chasing promotion are two completely different things. We have re-established an under 19 team (in which a set number of over aged players are allowed) to develop the youngsters and I am sure Adams has had a say in that.

I predict Adams will create a an epoch of his own here, and potentially take us higher up the league than Parky, that wont be compromised by him being forced to blood youngsters. He is his own man and wouldnt have taken the job if he had been told part of his job was to develop the youth.

Well that's motivation for the young lads right there.

Let's hope we're not trying to convince a couple of "wonderkid" schoolboys to join the academy.

They’ll be clashes for sure but the aim is to get promoted and as long as that happens this season all is fine.

However, if not it could be a massive mess.

I see what you mean D, however I do get the honesty of Adams. He has been given a priority, perhaps over two seasons(?) of promotion, nothing else will do. There is absolutely no barrier to stop the young lads footballing development outside the main squad but not within our existing set up.There are some good National League sides out there as we all know. They can’t develop within our first team as “time” is of the essence , and as we have no recognised reserve set up as we once knew it, the best option to give them experience with “ men” would be the National Leagues.

Take Mc Burnie….. a footballing talent even at 17/18/ but as we saw during Parkie’s reign, he was chucked in the first team, as cover for the injured Jim far too early. Imho that did him no good in the short term. Thankfully he recovered well enough for Swansea to move in. “Thrown in” one year later than as was the case may have seen his full development at BCAFC ?

They will do fine in the National Leagues as there are some wiley old characters in there who will show them what it’s all about.

They’re an interesting one Exeter, but if you look at their last 10 years with the money they’re brought in then I don’t think it’s harsh at all. Would any of our fans accept their last 10 years so we could see a few youngsters come in and get sold on for big money? I don’t know all their situation, but considering they never keep their talent for long then I’d suggest they probably are forced to sell quickly I imagine their academy has a far higher running cost than ours, I don’t see at this level unless an owner is will to foot a lot of the bill how an expensive academy and a quality first team is sustainable. I think all our fans bar none will but promotion above youth development. If Sparks and Rupp want both it’ll cost. I remember people on C & B waxing lyrical of Colchester’s youth development when we were both in league 1, again didn’t end well! The evidence tells me you can’t have both of you want to become a championship club, which I’d hope is where we want to be.

Depressing reading for the younger players but cant really disagree with the approach.

The right approach from him it’s his job on the line, McCall, T & S played a fair amount of youth although a lot down to lack of depth but all it did is help them get the sack. He’s not daft treading water at this level and selling assets like an Exeter do won’t go down well with fans, it’s not as if he’s making us money personally.

No reason why, McBurnie was in the Parkinson era. We’ve never really developed any youth just had a lot of luck later down the line with the talented ones. If the club are going to preach about youth they’ll have to invest in the academy, scouting, coaching and training facilities otherwise it’s just leaving it to complete luck. Adams is a football obsessive he’ll have probably watched a lot of our games from last season by now and seen where relying on this youth got them. If Adams was going well and driven out over philosophy that would alienate an already dwindling fan base from 4 years ago.

If the performance matches the occasion on Saturday then I think many people young and old will rediscover what it is we love about football. Can’t wait

We do have a good production line here but the top prospects often get sold before breaking through. The young keeper, Daryll Ombang, the latest case in point.

I suppose its sign of the times given we are in League Two.

How do you break the cycle and convince those kids and the likes of Wisdom and Delph etc to stay to at least feature for the first team?

Or is them leaving before doing so inevitable when Premier League academies come knocking?
