If Novak is out long term then we still need another striker. Donaldson isn't anywhere near good enough and we've no idea whether Burrell is either.

is there any substance to the Novak injury rumour? Or are we basing it off some rubbish off TCA?

 

Genuine question:

When/who was the last player we signed who:

a) was sought after by relevant competition
b) was highly regarded by his own club/fans
c) has a good reputation outside of his own club/fans
d) looks genuinely promising for our current situation
e) sounds believable when they say they want to be here, specifically

I mean, is it my imagination or are we going back to players like Darren Moore and Robbie Blake who we signed as top prospects from lower league clubs and beat off other teams to sign?

There must be a more recent precedent surely?

And before anyone says it, no, not getting carried away, he could easily be a Vaughan/Doyle, but I do like the narrative surrounding this signing.

I think we were the only bidder; it was Carlisle's manager Keith Curle who said there's no way they would have to honour a valid and legal release clause for some reason. But, yeah, another good shout.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but Oldham fans are quoting £200k as the fee they paid, and £50k as the fee we paid.

Some of their fans are consoling themselves with the 'but we'd have lost him for free in the Summer' drivel, like £50k is going to make any sort of difference to them or the success they can expect.

 

What is it with your vitriolic view of Donaldson? We have had shedloads of much worse strikers than him.
Last season he was playing well until he got that injury when someone stamped on his toe.
His legs have clearly gone and no one wants him to be starting matches. But he's still a useful option to bring off the bench in the last 20 minutes. Holds the ball up well if it's played to his feet and is brilliant at winning us free kicks in dangerous positions. We could have far worse as a fourth choice front man.

 

I like your sentiment, but Donaldson is basically ready to retire and become a coach now.

If he doesn't play a single minute for us again, it will show our recruitment has worked. He's nowhere near professional level anymore.

 

Who else was in for Rowe? Did we beat off any competition for his signature?
At 30 years old, I'd hardly call him a "prospect". I think Blake was 21 when we bought him from Darlington, Moore probably something similar.

Hopefully we've signed him on a long term deal, and he can kick on and be as successful as the other names that have been mentioned.

 

Regards the striker injury blow rumour all should become clear today if it's true.
Thursday is traditionally the club's presser day before our weekend game.
I'm sure the media will ask for an injury update.
Personally I hope the rumour is way off the mark and confined to the bin.
