There's also a big difference between the success of a team with no idea what formation they are supposed to be playing, why they are being managed by an absolute no mark and one where the team respect the manager, play for him and know what they're supposed to be doing. I think our playing budget this year must be more than last years but it's a shambles

Right so McCall had some flaws. Agreed. What he also had was the ability to keep us in the top 6, play good football, make the majority of the time we watched the games enjoyable for 18 months despite working for an absolute cretin who hamstrung by wasting playing budget on absolute dross and getting involved in the football side to the obvious detriment of the team. I'm guessing that will be a record given Grayson was here for four terrible months and and well Collins.

Nobody is saying McCall is completely free of any blame, and no one is absolving him of any blame.

I love Stuart McCall, and I think all in all he did a terrific job, and I think we were a good team to watch.
he gets defended because A) he's a club legend B) Because we were consistently in the play off places during his tenure, and we've been shite every week since he was sacked, and C) People genuinely believe, with decent reason, that he was hamstrung by the chairman and was working under extreme conditions.

but jesus christ, not even Pep Guardiola is perfect - McCall made some questionable decisions - we chucked games away, the defending sometimes was abysmal, the team selections on occasion were mystifying but all in all he did a terrific job in very difficult circumstances, this point i feel is backed up by the fact Simon 'league 1 promotion specialist' Grayson was awful, and we're still shite now even under someone else.

he gets defended for very good reasons - while the main protagonist in most peoples minds - is still here wrecking the club, and causing major problems. and does absolutely nothing to help himself avoid criticism.

Younger players do not normally have a large impact on the playing budget and can be accommodated and carried as required as they normally will have slips in form. We did not recruit players of the same quality or better to replace the ones out going and were short in numbers as December/ January showed.

Think you have summarised my views fairly well. I would alter your your comment to, ‘...in all he did a great and at times terrific job in very difficult circumstances’. In all fairness there were times when he and the team available did a poor job. One of the quintessential examples in my view was Walsall away. Sublime football at times, with a Midas touch, to poor substitutions (poor bench to choose from) and the team from being 3-0 up losing its way.

I always remember him returning in 1998 and being worried that he would blemish his excellent reputation. He surpassed my expectations. However I think the fourth return was perhaps an expedition which was ‘one to far’. He was a partner in the choice of players who were signed, but then we know that many of the candidates being offered were scouted by others, the mandate to sign ‘developing’ players and that importantly all ‘all partners are not equal’!

Always comes across as a good and passionate guy, who is 100% City. Sometimes the old adage of not mixing business and pleasure is a good one (also think James Mason in this category).

I'm not sure I agree with such a sweeping generalisation to be honest. You're talking like they are boys when really they're just the same sort of age as Kyel Reid, Stephen Darby, Rory McArdle, James Meredith, James Hanson and Nahki Wells were when we were in league two.

Once again. I agree that we didn't recruit sufficient quality however I don't think that was purely due to the parameters set and was the responsibility of all members og the transfer committee.

I've just had a little thought which is more general. McCall has started 5 seasons here as manager under 2 sets of owners and several different strategies. How many players has he recruited in all that time who were actually decent and likeable? I can't even think of 5 or 6?

Uh oh. Now you've really done it. This thread will soon implode into a James Hanson thread! ;)

The thread title is "Current State of Our Club" why has it gone off topic to such an extent as to start going over old ground, it matters not a jot what happened last season, McCall was fired, Rack & Ruin brought a manager in to try and stop the rot in Simon Grayson.
They offered Grayson a two year deal even though Edin has always preached the club would be run by a head coach who had a squad (which he would have input into the selection of the players within that squad) manager Grayson said he would take it short term and review it at the end of the season, which he did and told Edin it was not the position for him, just as Phil Parkinson had done 2 years previous.
Now you can dress it up how you like but no one with any credibility would work under Edin's conditions and Edin failed to convince any of the "quality candidates" Edin had said applied for the job, yet during the process of interviewing these quality candidates he got both Collins and Drury involved in the selection of players required for the coming season, so the argument can't even be used that neither Collins, Drury or Abbott were not responsible for the players that were brought into the club in the closed season.
Many expressed their concern with regards to the appointment of Collins, Drury and Abbott, and were told to give them a chance when nothing suggested these three would offer anything to take the club forward.
So let's get back on topic and discuss the present situation and how these 3 clowns 4 if we include Edin can pull this club out of the nose dive they are overseeing at the present moment.
I'll be there on Saturday because I'm a Glory hunting bastard I go in the hope that after O@Connors article in the T&A he might have shamed some of his team mates into getting their heads out of their arse's and realise they are getting paid for doing a job that 99% of Bradford City fans traveling (and spending good money) could only dream of doing, and if they perform as poorly as the did last Saturday be prepared to be on the end of the fans crticism.
Just get out there and show a little bottle and you will get the full vocal backing of Bradford City fans at the game, is that really to much to ask ?.

Why do you want to discuss previous manager when our real problems are staring you in the face. I realise that @Norman Corner@Norman Corner and yourself have a ‘brief’ to keep bringing the discussion back to McCall who is now being blamed for our current position. Stuart McCall’s failings and successes have been discussed till the Cows come home. We now have a coach who looks way out of his depth and due to Rahic stubbornness may well take us down, and you want to discuss McCall, you couldn’t make it up!

Just amazes me that plenty of other clubs that have off the field issues still manage to perform for themselves, their club and their fans.....but 30 odd of our squad over the last 9-12 months have just done anything but...can anyone square this circle....?

Who’s the one constant over the last 12 months? That should square your circle.

Great post@Bronco. We have more or less got a complete new set of players in, new management in, and yet the football is just as bad as it was from January onwards. But hey ho, lets still blame McCall. I must admit I didn’t agree with some of McCalls ideas, but as quite a few people have said, when he left we were in a playoff position. There has only been the 1 same person in charge throughout all this downfall and I think we know who that is. I also personally think one of the biggest mistake our coach as made is putting Wright as captain. He just doesn’t look a footballer or leader to me.

Yes the rot that had set in around the Yeovil game after Edin's comments.

Once again a poster trying to derail the thead to try and make a point.
What are you're thoughts on the present coaching set up and our perilous postion after only 5 league games, surely that is far more relavant than the past.
I'd love to see our team in the Championship before my time is up, but I fear Im more likely to see us in league two.

How's the home work going ?.
