My wife is a teacher and some of the stories she tells are genuinely heart breaking. Children who's only decent meal is that which is provided by the school. Children who are so happy to just talk to someone else, play with someone else and learn rather than being stuck up in a bedroom. Children who are scared to go home and would rather be with a teacher than a parent/guardian. A lot of time social services have their hands tied and teachers just have to watch and hope the child comes back tomorrow ok.

My wife's school are asking for volunteers from their teaching/support staff, those without young children to look after. There is a lot of talk of schools combing during the shutdown so that children from neighbouring schools can be put together reducing the need for as many teachers.

He wasn't side stepping them, he didn't know the answers. Thing is no one does, although plenty of know it alls on the internet seem to know better than the medical professionals paid to deal with this. This is unprecendented, certainly in my life time, very hard to be proactive against something where the goal posts keep moving, hence a fair bit of rectionary movement. Hopefully we learn as whole from this in how to prepare for when something like this happens again, we have procedures practiced and in place for large scale emergencies yet seemingly not for an incident of this nature.

I remember saying on C&B it was a bit of a culture shock from working with hairy arsed guys in a foundry environment to working with an all female staff, talking knitting patterns rather than footy that was the least of my worries.
I could never get my head around why each classroom had smiley faces to sad faces until one of the teachers put me right I found it difficult to take some of the stuff in.
As has been said at times they are more social workers than teachers, I certainly had far more respect for teacher having worked along side them, I was previously of the opinion school bell goes to finish the day and all those long holidays, boy was I wrong, you guys have my respect.

Sometimes it comes from the most unlikely areas. My brother in law private tutors kids from very well to do parents, ends up being more of a mentor than tutor to some of them as their parents are so blinded by their careers they don't acknowledge their kids are even there. Don't get me wrong there are some utterly useless teachers out there like all professions, but there are a great deal who make a genuine difference to a childs life.

This is the thing that people don't consider when calling for school to be shut.

Problem now is that we have parents at home that are working and kid or kids playing in the bedroom bored because they won't be getting any attention.

So kids only get a decent meal at school..

    This is so grim!

There will be people out there right now making millions off the back of this just as they did on the financial melt down we had. The rich get richer the poor stay poor.

I blame the Labour party up to a point for a lot of what's wrong IMO with parents and children in this day and age, I understand that now a days to purchase and run a home you need two parents working but like it or not that was always potential for parents to take more interest in working than parenting they had to keep a roof over their heads.
They were the party that encouraged pre-school nursery and after school clubs, some kids were coming in for morning club for 7:45, attending school for 6 hours or so then going to after school club until mum or dad picked them up sometimes around 6pm and some of these children were 5/6 years old.
Thank goodness until our two started nursery/primary school we struggled but managed on my wage, but there were sacrifices that had to be made at times, no away games ;).

Unfortunately that is very true, it even looks like our local corner shops are making hay while the sun shines charging exorbitant prices for toilet rolls and sanitized hand wash, robbing b@stards.

Well Mrs. TB is a school nurse for Nashville schools. They are out indefinitely and she has to either do records work from home or work from a clinic in Nashville doing general public health work.
My school is out until the end of March and today I got an email from School System (echoing @bantam65@bantam65 ) asking for volunteers to help distribute food to known families during this time. My school gives ALL students a free breakfast and a free lunch anyway due to our extremely high poverty demographic, so without this program, there is a very real possibility of kids going hungry, don't even start on the social aspect of being at school (as other posters have mentioned). Unfortunately it seems I now have a mandatory 14 day home quarantine if I ever do get back (currently on 3rd rebooking of flight) so I will be unable to help there.

What is a key worker? Why wasn't the list released at the same time as the announcement of closures. How are schools meant to work out who gets to keep sending their kids if no one knows what a key worker is?
Nursery my lad goes to wants to know if we are key workers, and if so what? How can I reply if no definitive list is available. Plans need to be in place in less than 48 hours.

I know people who work in schools and I think they have known about this for around a week. Maybe slightly less. Most of them have identified the students who are “most vulnerable” and are ready to go with it.

A real sad state of affairs, not only detrimental to the children’s education, but their mental health and other things such as developing social skills. Let’s hope it’s only until September and not even longer. Sadly a necessity however regardless of which political party you support, it was always on the cards and has already happened in other countries.

We’re all going to feel it, I’ve already been told I’ll be out of a job by October if we aren’t somewhere near normality again by August and I can’t see that happening. Already having to work from home which is driving me mad, it’s surreal missing a drive to work, little things like having the music on in the drive in saying morning to colleagues, talking about another loss etc. We all take day to day life for granted, hopefully if anything comes out of it it’s a clearer perspective from everyone myself included.

I agree. Luckily in my job I can work from home and keep my job but do feel for others in a situation.
It’s difficult at home. Couple of days a week is nice but every day is hard and mundane. Evenings feel like they go on forever.
Do miss the chat of the workplace as mundane as that can be at times

House bills and food costs are going to increase massively.

Come on Boris.. more is needed to be done!

Bit harsh your company saying that to you already.

Chin up mate. If we can get more testing and that antibody drug up & running then it will help with normality.

    Here for you mate.

    Well that was absolutely pointless.

What, six days ago Boris says schools won't close and we get a load of 'strong' reasons why (all financially-driven) - now they're closing.

Were the reasons just utter guff and an example of the professionals getting it wrong, or were we simply waiting until Boris and Rishi could get a financial plan in place? Because as soon as they announced how they would support business, it was fairly clear they had an eye on closing the schools pretty much immediately. Bear in mind those measures probably wouldn't be available until next week, and oh look, schools shut from next week onwards.

    Honestly, why so slow?

Because of Boris et al, we have quickly overtaken many of our European neighbours, posting the 7th highest number of new cases in the entire world. Incredibly we have the sixth highest death toll in the world as well, with an eye-wateringly high percentage. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Containment has been appalling here in the UK.

"But we don't need to close schools because the children only get mild symptoms", say the experts. Irrelevant until they know for a fact that those with mild or no symptoms are definitely NOT spreading the disease - something they simply do not know.

    https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/14/health/coronavirus-asymptomatic-spread/index.html

"We now know that asymptomatic transmission likely [plays] an important role in spreading this virus," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

Osterholm added that it's "absolutely clear" that asymptomatic infection "surely can fuel a pandemic like this in a way that's going to make it very difficult to control."

    WELL DONE CHAPS.
