Sky news reports that covid deaths was only 2.4% of total deaths this week

A total of 217 deaths were registered in the week ending 24 July (or week 30) involving COVID-19 - accounting for 2.4% of all deaths in England and Wales.

Why? Think we just need to be all bloody clear what the goal is. If its to protect the NHS the fine. Stop deaths the fine but if its so nobody gets the virus the we are in for a difficult ride.

    What is the goal?

    This!

I just don't understand anymore what we are looking to do. The death rate is rapidly down.

The death rate lags by as much as 6 weeks, maybe even longer now the treatment is getting better.

If you're only going to act when the death rate goes up you're already too late. That was the mistake first time around.

Everyone knows that point about the age factor. What he failed to point out was 350 died within about 10 weeks who were below 60 with no other illnesses. That was by switching off the whole of the NHS to ensure intensive care coped. Who knows how bad it would have been had we just took it on the chin like Boris wanted us to do originally.
    We simply don’t know.

I get the economy point but as a human race do we not need to rethink the economics and ideals of our system, the capitalism system? Does it work? We have these crashes and recessions every sort of decade recently. If not sooner. This one is like nothing before but it’s going to be a disaster as we haven’t even found out yet. So does it work? There must be another way for me and maybe we will look back in years to come and laugh at how stupid our system was. Who knows. Possibly a debate for another thread

This is the worst Civil Service ever, They are responsible to supply up to date figures and information to government ministers and to implement government policy, We have a system where if the civil service are useless or make mistakes they keep there job but the minister goes, No wonder we can never manage major problems or investments in projects

Very true. The number of times this government has announced world-leading or game-changing developments is embarrassing. They started with the Isle of Wight app and only yesterday described the 90 min test results as game-changing. Let's see

I saw a good quote on this world beating claim

“We didn’t want a world beating track and trace system. We just wanted a virus beating one and we don’t even have that”

One thing we keep hearing is if we test more we find more? Well yeah we will that’s understandable at first but we continue to find cases despite the fact any cases we found previously should have isolated until it was no longer contagious?
So surely soon we should be seeing a decrease in infections? Despite the higher testing? Or am I missing something?

Surely that's only if you're catching 100% of cases with the tracking which is basically impossible.

We're tracinking enough to stop it getting out if control and keep a lid on it but not enough to substantially decrease or eradicate it.

And that last part is the worrying for when winter rolls around.
Of course you’re not going to catch 100% of it. That’s almost impossible

Yep. They look to have capacity I'm the system as well so I suppose it's down to us all to be mindful of our contacts and be willing to be inconvenienced even though it's a ball ache.

I agree about the lack of sense in the recent lockdown decision. Went to Skipton today -it was heaving and all the eat in places were rammed.

Regarding your reluctance to take your kids to the restaurant-I can understand that stance BUT change the word to school as that is also what you have virtually described, but with kids instead of adults and pens and pencils instead of condiments and cutlery.

That's how complicated this is going to get.
