Serco is a major outsourcing company and well-regarded in those sectors. They have lots of Govt contracts for all sorts of things - prisons, asylum centres, prisoner transport, immigration enforcement, IT, educational training, PFI's etc etc. Their CEO Rupert Soames is very close to the Tory party; his brother is Nicholas Soames ex-Tory MP and Churchill's grandson

Just opened this thread and read several of the early pages of posts/replies, to say we were flippant about this virus is an understatement.

I am very sceptical about the Government’s proposed £1 billion for education and the tutor proposal.

Why does the money have to go to private companies? A political choice to funnel tax payers’ money to private business rather than give the money to schools/local authorities to use most appropriately for their particular children’s needs.

The best thing that could be done, right now, to help children catch up is reduce class sizes. Put the money into that, with additional staff and potentially additional temporary space, if necessary. This will give children more dedicated time with their teacher, who knows them best. I’m currently teaching ten kids in my bubble and while it is a bit artificial and that is too few children, they are making progress because I can focus on their needs. A couple of the boys, who have struggled for a lot of this year, have thrived in an environment that is quieter, with less distractions. Even dropping class sizes from thirty plus to around 22-24 makes so much difference.

I’m not against the idea of using tutors. Without doubt they can add a lot to some children’s learning, but it doesn’t work for all children. Too many children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, struggle to concentrate for long periods in the normal school day. Layering extra onto them will probably make negligible difference.

It will very interesting to see how this progresses. I suspect a u-turn at some point.

I do feel for the working shielded. So the government they want them to go back to work in August with their employer being understanding but I not putting in any laws to protect them.

Not sure I would be doing that! You can't say to people work from home then expect the shielded to go into an office. Can see this as a way of employees getting rid of the shielded when they refuse to go in to an office.

Can't understand why the government isn't just saying to everyone go back into the office!

What your thoughts now @StaffordBantam@StaffordBantam ...You still doing that you think and when you're ready?

I'm in the fortunate position of being free to make my own choice. I would not want to be shielded and employed by someone who only pays lip service to the rules.

I just think it's madness. Shielded can go back to work but kids can't go to school..strange.

The company both my daughters work for are more than happy with the response from the people who are working from home, they are actually saying it has to be something they will seriously consider with regards doing more of it in the future.
Barclays said they would do the same, imagine what they could save with regards the Barclay Building in London.

I think if a lot of companies keep the working from home going then internet companies will charge more for home/business use, just like car insurance is usually extra for business use

Hopefully get a better service. Mine doesn't half struggle during the day at the moment with every bugger in the local exchange area using the internet.

Maybe there's a need to adjust the Barnett formula so more infastructure can be put into faster download of porn in Scotland.

If you read the small print it says for personal use only, not to be used excessively for business purposes.

“We have other more appropriate packages such as Homeworks, and for small business use there are services provided for by Virgin Media Business.“

So, the virus causes complications in people who suffer with obesity - what does this Goverment do ... yea, let’s open pubs and restaurants and keep the gyms closed (don’t get me started on schools).
Shouldn’t be surprised really ... I’ve lost all faith in this stupid, reactive, pro popular bunch of fecktards ... a complete total and utter shambles.
The shit fest that’ll be caused when the pubs reopen will be a right sight.

The daily press conference has been cancelled so that the likes of Sam Coates and Hugo Guy can't ask the PM any more awkward questions! It's nothing to do with the crisis being over as both Vallance and Whitty were making clear. This will still be running until at least next spring according to the scientific experts. The PM didn't appear to agree with them.
