Are you comparing those wet markets with farmers markets and fish stalls or playing devils advocate, I would think the meat sold at farmers markets all pass the required animal tests as would the fish on sale.

Of course, many more will be infected by Covid 19 and it's yet to be seen whether having been infected with it provides long term immunity. And that's why I agree only partially with you. A vaccine to protect us all in the future is of paramount importance and therefore disagree with you. I really believe one or more vaccines will be developed around the world and manufactured on a large scale. But it will take time.

Testing is only part of the longer term answer. If it transpires that no lasting immunity arises from infection, then antibody tests become much less valuable. It sounds brutal, but maybe the answer is to look at the worst case scenario of infection rates and demands on the NHS and invest whatever is needed to cope with the peak(s) to be seen in different waves. Might be a logistical impossibility but financially it’d probably be less of a hit than the economy is taking right now.

I think its all about the vaccine.

Normally a vaccine takes 5 years and we rushing the hope to 12-18 months.

The thing is how will things look in that period until a vaccine is found? Countries like India, Africa just can't afford this lock down for much longer and in truth England can't.

I assume by that that you mean swiching off the current containment regime and opening shops, restaurants, cafes, entertainment venues, football grounds(!) etc. That would be a tough call for the Govt. It would mean a very conscious and very public decision to balance the deaths and misery which would arise to a not an insignificant number of the population against the economic benefits to the rest of us. Phew!

I'm not advocating it, I'm just thinking out loud really. There are so many unknowns, but IF we're talking about a virus that people have no immunity from even after infection and IF its 12-18 months before we expect a vaccine, some very tough calls will be needed.

I certainly wasn't suggesting you were advocating it! But it would be a very brave Govt which followed that route. It goes back to the original Plan A which in crude terms was to let the virus have full rip and in doing so build up herd immunity in the population. It was only when 'the penny dropped' as a couple of broadsheets referred to it, in No 10 and the numbers of deaths and impact on the NHS were highlighted that Plan B, the current containment strategy - self isolation, closure of many businesses and establishment and social distancing - was implemented. I don't think any Govt would be brave enough or rather foolish enough to return to Plan A. Well, I hope not!

It's a live in hope Virus. If you get it you just don't know bad it's going to be but the government will have to decide do they let people get back to normality or it in stages?
We can't keep crossing the road when we see people.

Agreed. For me, life comes before money. But theres a huge difference between a couple of months of severe social restrictions and 12-18 months. At some point, the restrictions will become a bigger risk to life than the virus.

Mmmm. Have a look at the background to TownHall.com. Guest writers have included Donald Trump, Eric Trump (son of Donald) and the Prez's daughter-in-law Lara Trump. Do you think it might have a particular angle at the very moment when the Prez is signalling he wants to reopen the US economy by easing their own lockdown? And that's despite having the highest number of deaths from Covid 19 in the world.

To be fair what else can be done? They feel that they have built enough hospitals and got enough testing equipment.

Trump wants the country back open but he's past the situation like a hot potato because he knows he doesn't have the power to do it.

I honestly do see when you have increased testing to suitable numbers and got more beds that a country can do though until a vaccine is found.

What happens in the US is going to be huge.

If they get it badly wrong, the world could easily stop blaming China and start blaming the United States.

    Not really.

China will always be where the finger is pointed until a full investigation.

Well we succeeded well so far with hospital beds the capacity is coping extremely well as are ventilators. As for testing we are moving up the European table quickly now 460.000 to date

Oh and just been shopping, the difference in social distancing between stores is interesting. Tescos at Queensbury seems well organised and the people seem intent on trying to keep a distance of as near to 2 metres as possible. Aldi at Allerton was just a free for all once you were past the front door. Checkouts were ok. And does anyone know what the restrictions are with family members/kids?

Apparently they have waived it and made a donation.

the biggest thing probably is where people think it is going. Ask most people and they think it is going to the NHS, so PPE, nurses, ventilators and stuff
