I really can't understand how that judgement can be made. So difficult when you are cycling near to the pavement and people step out using their phones.

If he had gone through a red light then I can see where there would be a liability.

People will be stepping in front of cyclists now to make a claim.

 

There was a case in Manchester recently.

A drink driver, no insuranceand speeding, ran over a man lying down in the road at night. The man in the road was drunk after a night out. Because the man in the road shouldn't have been there, the driver was acquitted of causing death by dangerous driving. Slightly different circumstances, but it is hard to see how the cyclist is more culpable than the driver for being involved in an accident.

 

This smacks of poor planning.

 

FC&B can only be attributed to GOOD planning. Verging on self-care, this tea.

EDIT: all eating is self-care, yes, but this ensemble particularly so.

 

This is the fundamental issue

Speaking to colleagues in Belgium and Holland say they're in a car and want to turn onto a side street on their side of the road they'll have to effectively stop and wait if any pedestrians or bikes are around. If there was a crash they'd be presumed to be at fault.

I might start a new political party. Pedal power.

If you did plan it, it seems odd that you've never planned such a good plan before.

It does make a massive difference.

I've cycled around The Hague quite a bit, as my sister in law and family live there. It isn't perfect, but even boy racers in their VW golf wait at traffic lights for cyclists to go, before whizzing off.

But, it is also illegal, or at least you can be fined, to cross the road on red in the Netherlands. Pedestrians wait.

Indeed, as they can cross wherever as long as not on a red light crossing. You can't always go as quickly as you like because of this, but the design is so much better that it doesn't feel as fraught as cycling here.
