The problem with stronger policing and stewarding is the fans then complain that the police and stewards are too heavy handed, as you say theres not a lot we can do. As for the police, was there any comment regarding the numbers of police both inside and especially outside the ground? There were more police with riot helmets and body armour than there were for our games against big rivals in league 1. Massive overkill from Lincolnshire police for what was pretty much an incident free day.

Over the top. Humberside police tweeted to say how good of an operation it was. Was totally over the top and still don’t know why football fans are expected to just accept it every week when we travel in numbers. A small minority cause problems yet everyone is treat as a criminal the moment you say you’re going to football.

Don’t know how you got to the game but was on an unofficial coach and treat like animals. Stopped on motorway. Rounded into a lay-by to await police escort. Camera came on bus filming everyone. Madness

A very very small minority caused a few problems, no more than most away games. The smoke canister will probably reported on but by and large a very well behaved away following. There really was no need for the complete waste of police resources no matter what Humberside police might think. Laughable really, giving themselves pats on the back, maybe they can tell how much their whole operation cost for the day. And who actually pays for all that overtime?

Do the two not come hand in hand though? Had there not been such a police presence, would our stupid half term half wits and their grandads been a little braver and more likely to cause trouble?

I think that level of policing is the norm for their home games.
Their fans have/ had a reputation for causing bother, if you google their trip to Halifax the other year you will see what I mean.

If the police are out in numbers it reduces that risk of bother but looks like overkill, less police could end up with bother and then they look under prepared.

That would be the logical answer but i'm not that sure. I've seen games with far more potential for trouble than this one with less police presence. Its the sort of police presence i would have expected if we were playing Leeds, it was that high in numbers. I'm still not sure where the threat of trouble came from, last season we had a bit of bother at Rochdale and odd other incidents hardly worth reporting. From my perspective they've completely over blown any threat of trouble at somebody's expense.

To be fair the threat of trouble at the game highlighted in the report is obvious. Its got all the ingredients, a match with lots at stake, a last minute goal, and they are playing Port Vale, a club from an area still stuck in the 70s with fans known for this sort of behaviour. Couple this with the clubs inability to proactively deal with the situation then you end up with that. The difference with Saturdays game is there for all to see. Nothing really to play for at this stage and a fan base that is generally well behaved. I know why Grimsby and Humberside police decided on their actions but i do not agree with their policing numbers at all. As i said a complete overkill to justify their shortcomings last season.

Why is every fan treat with such disdain and treat like scum the minute they are going to the football? Very backward police mentality that has to change.

Why not keep the fans in the stand for an extra ten minutes after the game like you see at most away games they are expecting trouble? Home fans would have cleared off then. Instead we go the intimidating stand off on that road outside ground.

Do they still keep away fans in after the game? Thought that had stopped years ago

Not sure but always feel it’s a better way than letting everyone out at same time if expecting trouble.

Most police forces manage it better nowadays I guess. Except Humberside

I think they had to stop keeping people in as it was classed as an illegal arrest or something daft

That was OK when there were football specials but with trains and buses to catch after a game I bet you would get pretty pissed of spending an evening on a train platform after you missed your last connection by 10 mins.

Why don’t we have ball boys?
What was wrong with the TV’s on the concourse after the match ?
