Ta! Research (in various fields) gave me a living, and a lifelong hobby to boot.

Alas, yes -- some of those mentioned are like memories of personal disasters: try as you might, you just can't erase them from the memory banks!

My master player list tries to pull together all the relevant information for each player, including birth- and death- dates and places. A lot of that data has come from Frost's book and all the other books and now websites that give player histories (e.g. Hugman, Rothman's, Williams); the T&A's notices also help. There are still far too many missing bits, though, especially for some of the players from our early days.

Yes, I too think he was alright. Certainly one for our best foreigner squad -- though not starting XI -- rather than worst.

We've had a few duff Aussie keepers, though! But there have indeed been plenty of good players from all over.

We've had a few foreign-born players who clearly were not foreigners -- I'm thinking of a couple from our early days who were born in India. But most recently, we've had Kelvin Mellor. The sources I trust (Rothman's, Hugman) have him born in Copenhagen, but now I've seen claims of Crewe as his birthplace. All give the same birthdate. I know his playing career began at Crewe, but life itself?

Red rag to a bull, questions like that! But you've diverted me from parish books and other early records, for which I am grateful -- those early ministers and assistants meant well with the records, but their handwriting tends to veer from bad to illegible! My head hurts...
