No players will be signed on big contracts from now on. Football has been shaken to the core by Covid 19 and most likely will never be the same again.

They are allowed to work once their football career is over just like the rest of us, could never understand that argument that they have short careers so they need to be asking top dollar, many Premier League players who have performed at that level may be made for life but lower down the pyramid they will have to get a job.

Most of your posts since the lockdown is about how bad it would be if Liverpool are not premiership champions that they won't be signing any players if it bothers you so much go register on their forum and you can all cry together and your only trying to wind our resident hammer up by mentioning West ham every post.
Think you should have a little rest again as this lockdown has sent you dafter than normal.

He's certainly a strange guy but I'd think he watches Bradford City not sure he's a fan/supporter though, I doubt he'd still be posting if he was just posting to wind other posters up.

I've never subscribed to that 'short career' theory either. You earn what you are worth during your playing career, you then move on to something else, be it in or out of football. Even if they only play for 10 years and earn a salary comparable to the countrywide average salary, its better than working for a living. If you'd given me a chance to play football for 10 years on my wages i'd have bitten your hands off. And your feet.

So is someone in the armed forces! Put their necks on the line. A lot of people have a second career, including former footballers.

I dont buy into all that

It's a footballers choice if he retires after playing... if not he gets a job like the rest of us

I would like to agree but greed, stupidity and selflessness will prevail and it won't take that long.
It will just be a smaller pool of teams in the shit pool after a few fold in the upcoming months and years.

I think many players will be in a situation where they will either sit it out thinking all the offers are too low before getting desperate around 2 months into the season so there will be some real bargains to pick up or they will sign short term deals on low pay and hope they can either negotiate a better deal later or they have other options on better terms

It's not though can they get another job but rather do they have skills for another job.

You see it in Tennis where a lot of talent youngsters drop out of the sport if they haven't made the top150 by about 22 because its still young enough for them to realistically go back to education or to start training in a new career but as you get older that gets harder (both to actually learn something new and to be in a position to do so due to financial & family commitments.)

There is also the factor that many of the 'low skilled' jobs can often be off the table for older sportspeople due to wear and tear from playing professional sports as sportspeople often have issues with their joints and msucles/tendons etc

Tom Penford....’After retiring as a player he studied at the Open University and became a chartered accountant’.
David Sayers......’He began training as an accountant after signing for Darlington in October 2016’.
Nigel Pepper.....’Since hanging up his boots eight years ago, he has studied for a teaching degree and is currently working.....’
Bobby Ham........ set up a construction business.
    Bruce Bannister.......Sports Shoes unlimited.
Peter Jackson....... worked in the care System.

For sure there are many former players who still work in football in other capacities. Les Chapman was the kitman at Manchester City.
David Weatherall works for the FA.
Don Goodman, Sky Pundit, also Peter Beagrie was a former pundit.

Not many footballers make enough in their career to retire in their early thirties and live an affluent and fulfilling life.

No where did I say that it isn’t possible to move into a second career just that it’s harder when you get older. Especially if they don’t have a nest egg to fall back on that allows them to get qualification in something else or the resources to start a business. Remember that was initially the point of testimonials so that players had seed money for their post football careers (which used to often mean buying a pub). If you have a primary career that has a short shelf life you need to make good money doing it not to fund your life for the next 40+ years but to give you options so you can earn a living

I work with athletes in a far less secure sports industry, and believe me committing to that sport is an all or nothing decision that often involves conflicting advice from various sources, ie, family.

Because it's less secure, secondary careers aren't just after thoughts, they are generally a very real and active part of their lives until an athlete reaches a certain point of their career and a contract capable of funding them for the immediate future.

That young people can forego all of that before they've even made it in football is bizarre, and possibly unsustainable going forward. In some ways it must make it much more difficult later in life to just switch careers. That's largely because football exists in a totally unrealistic financial bubble.

Footballers just like other sports stars have the opportunity to learn other things while playing, the time off they have gives them a lot of leisure time to do just that. Whether they choose to do just that is their perogative. I know personally of a few rugby league players who have taken the opportunity to undertake training for jobs such as trades and university courses whilst playing professionally. I have no sympathy with the ones that choose no to, after all, this moment in time has proved there are more important things in life thatn kicking a ball around a field.

One of the ‘too go to’ options for many footballers in the past was to become a pub/club landlord. Barry Gallagher https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/17517817.former-bradford-city-footballer-hopes-his-pub-can-play-a-blinder-at-fundraising-night/

If there is a bad recession(if!) and the majority of clubs are skint and the quality and quantity of squads are cut to the bone how on earth are you keeping paying customers coming to games as its bad enough City are in the khazi league but if it gets even worse to watch...................what would be the point?

"I really enjoyed us playing crap today sonny, shall we do it again in a fortnight?"

    Masochism.

I'm sure you have thought the same many times over the years you've watched Bradford City, yet you still returned, Masochism maybe or blind loyalty, count me in the latter, although theres a lot to be said for the former;).
