If Reeves ever gets back from injury he has to be thrown straight in, Wright and Akpan together does not and will not work. Both look ponderous. Payne is not a central midfielder, certainly not as a two, could get away playing him in a three but his best work is in the final third of the field. I would look at bringing a central midfielder in on loan as a matter of urgency.

StaffordBantam, Same here rail journey and an overnight stay. Not this time I'm afraid.

Thank goodness there is 2 upfront. Footie starts at 10.45pm for me so means it doesn’t finish till gone 12.30am on a school night. Gonna stay up and watch it. Hope my faith is rewarded tonight

 

Interesting. 4-4-2. Collins said he doesn’t take notice of outside criticism and on tonight’s formation he must have been taking notice.

Plenty of effort. The ball is by passing the midfield a lot, playing it directly out to the wings (Payne and Scannell). Had a few chances, Akpan should have made it two nil. No nonsense defending by us. And no, we don't seem to be closing down more agressively, Burton just don't seem to be using the ball very well. They've had some joy down the wings, with their left winger looking increasingly dangerous.
If we keep this up, then hopefully we'll have some chances on the break, as Burton as bound to take the game to us more.
McGowan will get booked. Looks a bit clumsy, and jumps in too much.
Miller not doing much. Doyle making some runs, but generally it's the Scannell just chucking it into the box hoping for someone to get on the end of it. Payne making things tick.

 

Win on Saturday and you’d have to say it’s been a decent start to the season.

Why did Akpan bottle that 50/50 ball by the centre circle in the first half.

I said exactly the same thing. There will be the usual chorus of he's not good enough (probably from the same lot who constantly slag Chicksen), but if ever there was a game for a 20 minute cameo from Kai then tonight was it. Our front 2 never won a header all night and were bullied by their centre backs. Miller spent the second half chasing shadows. Give Kai a run out and take some of the donkey work off Doyle. That said delighted to get a win by whatever means!

 

I thought the team grew in confidence after Payne scored, it was almost as if a switch had been turned on. They were much more positive.
There were still gaps all over the place that a team better than Burton would have taken advantage of. This might improve with time.
I was puzzled as to why Burton took off their best player (no 11) but perhaps his replacement was detailed to handle Scannell, although at one stage they put 3 players on him to no avail. I thought Scannell was immense tonight, on this evidence we will need him to keep fit.
We need to stop sending long balls up to Doyle - not his game. Miller worked his socks off, but he is very similar in style to Doyle, so I am not sure they complement each other.
Mellor had trouble with their number 11, I thought replacing him with Riley was a waste of a sub at the time, but perhaps not.

 

Good 3 points if a little patchy in performance but how badly did it show we are crying out for a mobile central midfielder and a target man up front as a matter of urgency

 

We need a right hard bastard in midfield, another quality forward and centre back with pace.

Chicksen was dogshit as per but I thought mellor was doing ok till he got subbed.

 

Doyle and Miller play their football on the deck mate. The big strong Burton defenders had them in their pockets all night.

The reason we continued with the long ball was because we lacked the quality and composure to play out from the back. I noticed that even when not under pressure, O'Donnell never played out from the back, preferring to punt it long.
