I was a rampant brexiteer. Would definitely think long and hard about that now if I had to choose again.

They won’t allow cabinet ministers on there because they don’t like being asked “ difficult “ questions, no matter who the presenter is perhaps. Even right winger Marr created a huge car crash for the buffoon on Sunday morning. Dreadful stuff!

Is Brexit a significant factor in the shortages of HGV drivers in France, Germany,Poland, most of Europe, the USA and China who all have huge shortages of HGV drivers causing shortages in those countries? The one thing in common is covid and the fact that no drivers were trained while the pandemic was on, We cancelled 40,000 tests in the UK which is the main cause of the shortage not Brexit along with changes to the tax system which was tightened up for the self employed as a lot of the cheap EU drivers were

Are you now agreeing that the BBC so-called bias is simply as perceived by the Govt or more particularly Nadine Dorries rather than it having any substance?

If the Govt is concerned about bias by the BBC, why do they appear on a regular basis on the Andrew Marr programme? That was a BBC current affairs programme the last time I watched it. In fact, it was only a few weeks ago that the PM was interviewed by Marr. It was a typical Johnson interview, lots of bluster and much guffawing but with lkitle substance. Marr had to remind him several times that the PM was in the studio to respond to questions about the Govt's policies. The PM certainly didn't take kindly to that.

Similarly, the Govt, and the PM in particular run scared from being interviewed by Nick Robinson on the Today programme. Robinson doesn't take any shit. In a recent interview on the Today programme, he pursued the PM to 'answer the question' repeatedly but unfortunately never received a meaningful response. And for the record, Robinson was a Parliamentary candidate for the Conservative party and remains a member of the party.

It's a poor showing for democracy when the Govt of the day won't appear on BBC flagship news programmes because they don't like their decisions and actions being scrutinised by respected journalists. It suggests that their policies are flakey.

As @Storck@Storck says, they need to grow a pair.

You read stuff like this and you realise it is all nonsense. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/how-will-boris-build-his-high-wage-high-skill-britain-
We also need a Semi and Low skilled workforce. People who drive HGV’s, pick fruit and veg, work in the food industry infrastructure, provide cleaning skills, construction workers, etc, etc.
Apparently 75% of Graduates will never pay off their student loans. Young people encouraged to enter into University education, build debt, and then be unable to earn enough in this ‘high wage’ economy. The way he talks you wouldn’t think that the Tories had been in power for 11 years!

When we catch up from the Covid pause in our economy we will be able to judge progress more quickly, Having our economy virtually closed down for 18 months has not helped,
On Newsnight last night the program did a piece on the lack of HGV drivers and blamed Brexit for the cause before a guest pointed out that it was remarkable that Newsnight had not mentioned the lost 40,000 HGV tests that were cancelled due to covid and that was the main reason for the HGV problem and that it was amiss of Newsnight not to even mention it,
However for most viewers it was typical of a very anti Brexit programme

Are these 40,000 actual booked tests, for trained drivers, that have been cancelled? Or is it, as I suspect, the notional number of tests that they would like to have done during that period. If so, that assumes that there would be 40,000 people who undertook the training during that period who couldn't get qualified for lack of testing. That seems highly unlikely to me, given the general reluctance of people to put themselves forward for this highly inhospitable job. I don't believe for one moment that 40,000 lorry drivers would have been trained since Brexit, Covid or no Covid.

The industry has always had to balance a lack of numbers with getting deliveries done, Brexit and Covid have just made the situation nearly untenable. But there is a major problem with enticing people into the industry, poor pay and working conditions one of the major reasons behind the lack of personnel. The 'test' scenario is just a bit of a smokescreen.

The Tories won’t appear on Newsnight because they don’t like being challenged, nothing to do with alleged BBC bias. Hate talking politics on this site but will make an exception in this case.

No did not watch as it is poor under Bruce and the anti brexit Broadcasting corporation, And as your second comment the polls show very few have changed there mind with most polls showing a 51 to 49% lead for remain if we voted today which is remarkable support for Brexit by the public as we have faced the problems of leaving the EU with the benefits yet to come,

So how long is the effect of Covid going to impact?

I would have thought that both Covid and Brexit were major ingredients in the shortage of Lorry Drivers. I would also think that the Government has to take major responsibility in this. They have a responsibility to plan for situations like this. Longer term issues such as the conditions that HGV drivers have to operate in, making it a less attractive occupation will also have an impact. Again the employers can look at their systems and the Government introduce legislation if necessary to improve the working conditions.

So no just blaming Brexit is far too simplistic, you need a strategic overview. However in my opinion, Brexit is a significant factor.

Of course Brexit it is a significant factor. The government's own Operation Yellowhammer report is literally playing out in front of our very eyes right now, and that was published back in August 2019, way before Covid hit.

The loss of ten to fifteen thousand HGV drivers leaving the UK has had an effect but coupled with a loss of the 40,000 who were due to be trained here in the UK and would be on the roads now has a bigger bearing on the shortage along with an industry that has not trained enough drivers year on year because it was cheaper to import them on low wages

Plus an Industry and Government which has allowed the conditions of HGV drivers to become so poor so that the occupation no longer appeals to many UK residents, who would rather work in jobs where the conditions/hours are more favourable.

He is not blaming Brexit he is blaming the government for not allowing what would be mass immigration to revert to a low wage hire them and fire them employment practice,
