There's no logic to anything planned in Bradford. The place is on its arse and money should not be wasted on pointless buildings, housebuilding in areas where its stupid to build them when there is no improvement to road system infracteuctures and public transport. But then it's Bradford Council isn't it who have a track record of sheer incompetence.

That's right. A few years ago, the Home Secretary (one Theresa May) outsourced the settlement of refugees and asylum seekers to G4S, Serco and Clearsprings. Their brief was to get the highest number of refugees etc resettled at the lowest cost. The vast majority have therefore been resettled in areas with the lowest housing costs which include Stoke, Middlesbrough and Bradford. Serco won't be resettling the asylum seekers in Richmond, Cheadle and Harrogate! The local councils had no involvement in this decision. Instead they now have to bid competitively for extra cash from the Govt to improve the local infrastructure - schools, health centres, social care etc - to support the new comers. It's little wonder that the spiral of decline in these areas continues.

It can't change. A lot of it has to do with its geographical location, there's a reason they didn't build a through rail line all those years ago, the cost was astronomical and for little economic benefit. From an infrastructure point of view Bradford was dying a long time ago and post 70s when it was clear regeneration was the only way forward Leeds was the area to benefit rather than Bradford due to this. When I was at construction college back in the late 80s early 90s the architect who lectured us told us back then Leeds had 5x the amount of prime building land that Bradford had and if you were to build a new city from scratch now the location of Bradford is probably the least desirable area to build one. Leeds doesn't have the building constraints of the pennines tied to its backside. We are the youngest City in the country built off the back of the industrial revolution, unfortunately that 150 year old infrastructure is also a noose around the neck, it can't be changed without huge cost that you cannot recoup. Better to spend the money elsewhere, it's the reason there is so much construction with houses and business along the m62 and m1 and within reach of major rail networks. Its why companies like Lavers are eventually moving, who wants to spend the best part of half an hour just getting your goods to the motorway network?
You need to fotget this idea it's the people's fault that Bradford has been in steady decline, business dictates that not the folk who live there.

I once suggested to the council to put more and bigger litter bins in the city centre, They replied that it was a good idea but could not afford staff to empty them, It is an unkempt, Unloved shithole and the council takes most of the blame

People pointing out that the very outskirts of Bradford have some nice places and cities like Leeds also have some extremely dodgy areas miss the point.

Cities are largely judged on their centres - it makes up a majority of what people see when they visit. The difference between Leeds and Bradford city centres is like night and day, there is nobody around in Bradford after 6 o'clock, no office workers spending money and nothing at all to do. On my way to City the other Tuesday I even tried to find a Starbucks or a Costa to grab a drink on the way from the Interchange and there wasn't a single option, it's dead.

There are also no inner city areas of Bradford that are attractive in the way that places like Chapel Allerton in Leeds are growing and developing.

I ventured into Bradford last week for the first time since Feb 2020. Big City fan but I live out of the area. It’s a hole isn’t it?

I'd be very surprised if anyone did come back after leaving, if I could live my life again I'd have left a couple of decades back.

Pre 1976, the Bradford boundary was just before Shipley Fields Road, if you are looking at the old Council area. So Shipley, Baildon, Bingley, Keighley, Menston, Burley, Addingham etc were not a part of the historic City of Bradford.

It's actually the complete opposite. Bradford councillors were desperate to get Ilkley included in the new Metropolitan District because of the huge revenue it would bring in in rates (pre council tax).

Which bit is made up? Having had the displeasure of working in apartments in the centre of Bradford I can confirm that a fair number of residents are no better than pigs, piles of rotting waste, nappies etc just dumped in the communal bin areas, even when the bins weren't full. In some cases just throwing the bags out of the apartment windows. Not the full problem though, lack of bins and bin emptying are part of the problem as are the ever growing number of fast food outlets within the city centre.

Last March i came over, drove the "scenic route" to Halifax. Little Horton Lane, Southfield Lane, Great Horton Road. All I can say is it's changed in the last 20 years. This concept of turning a blind eye to traffic chaos in certain locations is mind bogglingly crass.

Ilkley is in Bradford and has a Leeds postcode. A point that gives me great satisfaction.

I have this discussion with my old fella. Ilkley is not part of Bradford, its merely part of the Bradford metropolitan district and has the same post code in parts. The vast majority of the city of Bradford is a rancid shithole whereas a lot of the post codes are nice areas.

I'd say all of those places would happily remove themsleves from the rule of the metropolitan district if given the chance.
