Passed through eccleshill / undercliffe the other day. Roebuck, Ring of bells, Prince of wales, Robin hood ,Green man, Hare and hounds, Bolton junction all gone. All frequented in my youth . Times have changed.

My first pint was in the Woolpack at the bottom of Whetley with my dad. Remember it like it was yesterday. Miss him badly.

So true use them or lose them, was on Southfield Lane today now the Fire Brigade is closed along with The Wheatsheaf and the Southfield Hotel 3 pubs within 50 yards of each other and on a Friday night they were rammed, fall out of one and fall into another.

On the opposite side of things, despite having been shut for over a year and looking likely to have seen it's last days as a pub, the Red Lion at Four Lane Ends has recently re-opened. As a pub !

Living this side of Bradford, we used to have probably lost more than anywhere else - Shoulder of Mutton, Girlington, Craven Hieffer, Royal, Reservoir, Queens, Brownroyd, Prince of Wales, Old Kings Head, Druids, Travellers, Kings Head, Turf, Delvers, Jack & Jill, Chellow Grange. Our side of the city centre has fared worse with us loosing Lower & Upper Globes, Woolpack, Melbourne, The City, New Beehive, The Office, Lancaster, Haighies, Diplomat and more that I can't remember.

Only the Fleece and Hope still open in Allerton, none left in Heaton. I don't think there is a pub left between The Rose & Crown on Westgate and The Hare & Hounds on Haworth Road.

It used to be great crawl starting at the Royal in Girlington working down Whetley Hill (Upper Globe, Woolpack, Melbourne (I was in there when David Narey scored that wonder goal v Brazil in 1982 WC), Rose & Crown, the pub behind the Beehive that I can never remember the name of, The Harp, The Sun, Diplomat, Lord Clyde, without ever deviating from Tetleys Houses.

On the Tetley pub hunt, you could pretty much get a tee-shirt on that run alone.

Was just going to mention that, offcomedun wolfing a bowl of chili down in there prior to Vale match. And the beer better than I remember.

When I worked at the Eccleshill/Idle Social Services Area office in the mid-late eighties we used to regularly go in the Smiling Mule for a lunchtime pint or two and a darts team practice (we were Bradford Social Services Darts Champions several years running). Nowadays we'd be sacked for doing that.

Exactly the same as me, maybe a year later.
Stood in the vestibule daring each other to go in, but we weren't sure what to ask for.

Grattan social club Lidget Green 15yo, a neighbour signed me and a friend in, I looked about 12 at best. 3 pints and I couldn't understand why I kept bumping into tables and chairs! Stopped at a kebab shop at the Cemetery Rd traffic lights for a shami kebab, first taste of Asian food, blew my head off. It must be burned into us that beer must be followed by "curry"

The chilli is still excellent. And exactly the same as it was when I first sampled it nearly forty years ago! Landlord is Landlord, of course. What's not to like?

Likewise Eccleshill. Hanson used to be one of the best schools in Bradford until the catchment area and make up of the area changed. Now parents are desperate to get their kids in Immanuel.
