I think Jake Young has made more goal contributions already than Gilliead has in the years he's been here

 

I remember when he came off he was rubbing at his lower back visibly on TV, probably nothing but might have had a nudge going up for a header of landed badly for a challenge. Imagine it will be nothing.

Newport are using a 352 with wingbacks so far but the left sided one has only started playing as a LWB this season, mainly been a left sided forward all his career, so a potential target there for an experienced defender. Looks like they are going to try the same on the right, as they signed a right winger on loan from Bournemouth with the intent to play him as a wing back.

Omar Bogle is expected to partner Zanzala, the striker who used us for money leverage for a move to Barrow last season. Bogle scored a goal on debut but didn't feature in the cup game as they rotated a lot of the squad. Looking at their first games, our old loanee Matty Dolan has started as the middle CB of the 3, if Oliver/Cook can bully him we might see success as from memory, he isn't the biggest player.

Referee is Will Finnie who was the ref who sent off Paudie and Anthony O'Connor away at Forest Green in 2020. The only other City match he has ref'd in that time was the 2-1 defeat to Newport at the Cardiff stadium, after newport had some questionable game tactics to win a game winning free kick.

 

Cannot agree, he broke up their middle a lot.

There was a lot of passing the ball around at the back late in the second half, similar to the 1st half at Barrow. I could half forgive them given the heat, but I felt a bit more running at Newport could have brought another goal. You never know when that might come in handy.

I thought the lad Jake Young who came on looked VERY neat and tidy, too. Quick feet, willing to shoot on sight.

Can see him causing a lot of problems.

 

I think Angol is the dilemma at the moment. Playing out on the left doesn't suit him, although he did create a couple of chances second half with good trickery. I think Hughes will stay with him because of his height and heading ability, but I'm not sure we're getting the best from him being stuck out there.

 

You must be joking. Two of their midfielders had 100 international caps between them! (Hull I mean)

We beat them fair and square. They didn't want to lose.

 

Good result and a solid enough performance. The key for me was the early goal. I reckon the majority of teams will come to VP and try to frustrate the crowd, slow the game down, time waste etc so making a quick start will be really important for us this season. Come out snd start quickly, get the crowd going and try grab an early goal (easier said than done but made a big difference in this game compared to a similar situation vs Doncaster).

That is probably true but the rest of Gillead’s play is very good playing deeper he is a decent tackler and has good close ball control and is very energetic and playing that role he can carry the ball without constant square passing I think he fits in there perfectly
