Match Thread Bolton Wanderers (away) - Carabao (League) Cup

They have some decent attacking players, but their defence and fridge players are average at best. Most have been plucked from non-league on a freebie (so, please don’t compare them to Peterborough).

They use wing-backs, so it could be like-for-like in terms of formation. I expect McCall to line-up with a similar starting XI as per the Huddersfield fixture. DMH at RWB does cause me some concern.

Do you know much about their recruitment at Bolton or just read they are from non-league and dismissed them?
No one knows how they will do compared to your likes of Doyle etc but they are signed using a data model and analytics. Their football operations is headed up by Tobias Phoenix who was at Macclesfield before. His signings kept them in the league I’d say.
They have a plan and Evatt was picked as manager as he fit that plan with the style of play and his likeness to data and signing players.
If it works they have got some real bargains but I like the fact they have a plan going forward. Light years ahead of us. Good luck to them

Would you say it was a success keeping Macclesfield in the football league? Given the financial difficulties?
He’s moved up now to the biggest club in our leagues let’s see how he does.

 

You can't really judge until at least a good dozen or so games into the season. Bolton seem to pinning a lot of hopes on Sarcevic and Doyle getting the goals, i can't see Doyle having anywhere near the same effect as last season.

 

I don’t think Doyle would ever have a season like that again if he played for another 10 seasons. Sure he will bang in 30 goals again now I’ve said that.

But not sure what Bolton’s ambitions are. A woeful season last season with barely a squad to play a game. Now a lot of upheaval again and maybe will give the manager longer when they’ve spent 250k on his compo? Maybe a slow start with them coming good late on?

 

Predictions for me are hard but I'm feeling a 3-2 thriller to us!
I am bothered about a good cup run, especially as now cup run money can go into the wages with no repercussions! I think the fact its Bolton too is good as it would show where we both are currently. just a shame we cant go to any away days, need the bigger clubs at home!

Evatts whole reputation so far is built on a great season in non league. Lets see how he does when the pressure is on at a big fish like Bolton. There was very little pressure if any at Barrow. He struts around like he owns the place, see how confident he is if he doesn't get Doyle scoring and Bolton fans are on his back.

 

Both teams to score must be a shoo-in.

 

I think he saw the opportunity and went for it maybe too early but time will tell.
A bigger worry for Bolton is they have to pay off a large amount to outstanding creditors soon and if they don’t they could face a heavy points deduction again. He must have been assured it would be paid to join?

 

That much of an integral part of Macclesfield keeping them up that by the looks of it there no announcement on him joining Macc and the fans knew very very little of him. Bolton might be a big club but I wouldn't say that are a shining light for football clubs, would you?

They must have got their house in order this time, though this is the EFL so expect them to be in admin in a months time.

 

Think we might sneak it. Not because we're anything more than average, but because their defence looks very shaky, mainly built up of players signed from non league. Doyle will be a shoe in to score against us though.

Bolton don’t sound anything to write home about but I think they will be up for it and will see us as an opportunity to get up and running, recent form shows we are awful away.

After an underwhelming pre season and not seeing City for so long I’m looking forward to this, expect both to play full strength teams as well one of the benefits of starting this competition on a Saturday rather than the Tuesday after the first game of the season. We’ve only had 4 pre season games so the next 2 cup matches are vital to get us up to speed before the league kicks off.
