One thing the tories do well is pull together to paper over the massive cracks, no barracking or back biting during his speech. That said I've never heard so much shite in my life, I dont know how he manages to keep a straight face when spouting his guff. But for all that shite he still comes across better than the god awful Labour party.

And that’s the problem - no viable alternative.

For all his faults - and there are many - when they give him a chance to do that sort if thing he's bloody good. It's style over substance for the most part but it's cohesive, sensible and most of all positive.

He's in an almost unique position because he's separated himself from Cameron and May through Brexit so can almost shrug off the previous failings of the Conservative party without actually saying it and present himself as being a new broom.

I'm sure there are viable alternatives. They probably exist on the Govt back benches rather than on the opposition benches. With one or two exceptions, the PM has a habit of surrounding himself with incompetents and sycophants. The last thing he needs is somebody with their own ideas and policies challenging him from within his own Cabinet.

Lots of rhetoric and amusing side comments. Plenty of enthusiasm and playing to the audience both in the Conference and in the country. Very short on specifics and a complete absence of policy. Typical Johnson.

A game winner. The less substance on specifics, the easier it is for the after match interviewees. There's nothing to question when the substance is just absolute waffle. A case in point one of the very few quotes of substance Johnson made was to distance himself from previous leaders but when Dorres was questioned about this she just answered what would have been a completely different question. I thought the speech summed up the Tories to a tee, a speech of no substance but the sycophants lap it up because its for the greater good of the party.
If only Labour would learn how to play the game.

Agree. But at the minute that's all he has to do.

While Labour also has no meaningful policies he can play the game purely on rhetoric, cohesion, sidebites and optimism and he'll win hands down every time.

The high wage, "levelling up", Britain First type of message is working relatively well without any more specifics that they're giving. He's also got the positivity of the vaccine, economic growth, putting money into social care/NHS and the fact his main opposition were pro-lockdown and covid hasn't reached the projections all play into his favor without him needing to go much further.

It looks like he's very happy to let his ministers do the policy stuff and he'll just stand up and do the people friendly messaging bit. Which probably isn't a bad choice.

This was the claim of the left and the Brown supporters as they undermined and got rid of Blair claiming they could do better, They have never been in power since, Like Blair you can like or hate Boris but it would be foolish to write him off as foolish, He wins elections and it is an art some do not realise

Johnson is a brilliant campaigner and rabble rouser. But utterly incompetent at planning or implementation.

The idea that the Tory Party, of all people, have deliberately created a scenario to engineer a high wage economy is beyond laughable.
Who smashed the trades unions to prevent workforces from effectively protecting their members' living standards?
Who do you think it is that have been paying the poverty wages for the last ten years, to force down costs, keep prices low and maximise profits? It's the self same companies that pay squillions into Tory Party coffers every year and pay big bucks to Tory politicians for an occasional few hours in their boardrooms. The low wage employers are the Tory Party and their backers.
When the labour shortages embolden what's left of the unions to strike for higher wages, will the Tories be cheering them on? When higher wages cause price hikes on food and consumer goods, will the Tories be shouting, 'hurrah'? Of course not.
The Tories have always represented the interests of employers rather than employees, whatever bogus rhetoric they're currently spewing out for the gullible. Anyone who thinks they've suddenly turned into the champions of high wages is either tripping or born yesterday.

Much of what was implemented in his tenure had already been set up by Livingstone. What exactly did Johnson do that 'improved their lot no end'?

Despite all you say workers and pensioners have always been better off under a Tory government and as Blair famously told the Labour party conference when elected leader " You cannot let the past determine your future "

A conference specch full of hot air and people are creaming themselves. He's a walking joke and the only reason he's getting away with is because the left are insistent on fighting themselves rather than the blond buffoon. Honestly I spent most of his speech laughing at the identikit suits in the audience all dewy eyed, clapping like demented seals at his every word.
I guess it's better than being barracked by loony factions of your party like Labour.
I despair at politics I really do.

Really? Are you seriously saying that most ordinary working people were better off under Heath and Thatcher than they were under Wilson and Blair? Sorry, but that's nonsense.
