I was just thinking about Pat Liney and up you pop with him in your list. Definitely my favorite but Peter Downsborough was the best. In a similar vein, I would definitely have Ces Podd in, not just because he was one of my favorites but because he blazed a trail and had to deal with some bad stuff. Not the best but who cares?

Best City XI in my lifetime wouldn't be hard to piece together.

It would largely be the Premier League team, or the team that got us into the Premier League.

But in terms of ability according to the division they were in, here's mine:

    GK: Matt Clarke
    LB: Wayne Jacobs
    CB: Andrew Davies
    CB: David Wetherall
    RB: Stephen Darby
    CDM: Stuart McCall
    CAM: Dean Windass
    LW: Peter Beagrie
    RW: Jermaine Johnson
    CF: Lee Mills
    CF: Nahki Wells

    Bench:

    Mark Schwarzer
    Paul Heckingbottom
    Andy Myers
    Gary Jones
    Jamie Lawrence
    Robbie Blake
    James Hanson
    Peter Thorne

Sorry, Robbie, you lost your place for this:

He played briefly in the 70/71 season and became caretaker manager with some success but turned manager job down to become an undertaker.

Good idea selecting in terms of ability for the division they were in. Can you squeeze in John Hendrie on that basis?

Its all about opinions……I would never put Nahki in front of Robbie Blake nor Carbone, even taking into account divisional differences . Technically both were far superior, but hey it’s opinions.

Probably why the OP’s was an excellent choice of topic.

it certainly is all about opinions.Much as I respected Darby,in my opinion, Brian Mitchell was a better right back.

As a defender Darbs was better than excellent, but as an attacking defender non existent. Not down to ability probably , rather the formation that Parky set up. Ditto Brian Mitchell , although a different period.

Always difficult to choose. I guess it is what is measured as success? Great player or the teams they played in?
I think Pickford is up there. England when he has been playing for them, have been playing at a higher level. I would also think that Gunnar Halle, with 64 caps for Norway and a long career in the Premiership would be knocking on the door.

He won't make many teams on here but one of my favourites as a kid growing up was Karl Goddard.

Watching him just stood about doing kick ups and tricks instead of warming up properly was always fun.

Perhaps without the injury he'd have gone on to achieve more but either way, he's one of the first that really stuck in my memory.

Agreed. In that team playing 352 he was excellent. At that time, the formation was a breathe of fresh air.

Absolutely. Shame his career was so short due to injury. But in my book he's the best quality left back I've seen in a City shirt, even allowing for the excellence of Jakes.

No one has mentioned Phil Babb. Another class act, like Dean Richards, who went on to have six years with Liverpool, 35 international caps and played at a World Cup.

Fit Bobby Ham and Charlie Rackstraw in there and you have my vote (from that era)
