he's run towards his own goal, but not near the ball and not even near an attacker. he might aswell have just stayed up field.

 

He may as well not be on the field.

We took a player Gillingham(yes Gillingham) sacked and made him captain, we should all take a minute to think about that.

 

I have no idea what kind of midfielder he is tbh. He doesn’t to realise that it is job, to tackle that player in their half, even if he doesn’t stop him, he slows the progress down, so we are not split wide open.

 

Yep. I do believe I said that Wright was just jogging back and could have contained their man for the first goal. Jesus, that is really half arsed football. I hope Hopkin sits him down in front of that and questions what he was thinking.

I know its a Checkatrade game but that is absolutely criminal from a seasoned pro.

I've been questioning myself wondering if he's really as bad as I think he is on a matchday but videos like that prove it. There was another one recently where he played a pass and was in a good position to follow it up and support the player (Ball maybe?) that he'd passed to but he was nowhere to be seen.

He's a complete passenger and I'd rather have the likes of Devine or Colville in the side if the O'Brien's aren't available.

 

Was a decent goal though (despite the lack of challenges). Lovely little back heel to start it off, and then he's on the outside to provide the pass inside, for Moncur to apply a good strike.
We can only dream about seeing passages of play like that.

 

Ironic isn't it that on this and most match day threads just about every player we have is utterly useless according to the sack Hopkin brigade. They need dropping or shipping out because they're not up to standard no-one can do anything with them and no-one, in their right mind would have signed them in the first place. Meanwhile on the sack Hopkin thread just about every player we have would get into any League 1 team no problem, they are above average league 1 players that Hopkin should be doing more with. Talk about making the facts fit.

 

Re your first para, in the eyes of the football laws there’s no difference between the two.

Re your question, the offence we’d in theory be putting this under (presumably) would be denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity through handball. On that offence, the laws specifically state ‘except by the goalkeeper within his own area’ or words to that effect.

So, a keeper can’t be sent off - or indeed even cautioned - for what their keeper did last night.

I understand the legal aspect but (forgive me) I'm going to come to the conclusion that it's utterly bonkers because its basically cheating!!!

Watch again Wright isn't to blame. The massive hole in the middle came from O'Connor getting dragged mate.

Wright and O'Connor don't cover themselves in glory whatsoever. Lack of fecking application comes to mind.

 

O'Connor gets dragged out of position so easy.

He has no discipline and leaves us wide open. Never wins a header.

Watch him closely and look at the goals we let in. O'Connor is never in position. Awful player.

For me there are many, many points to be coached on that clip.....

Devine was in no man's land with his player. He's further advanced than Wright in the opposition half but not actually close enough to affect anything. He either needs to be closer to him so he can bring him down if necessary after the flick or he needs to have dropped off deeper into a more reserved right back role. By being so advanced he has left the space behind him exposed.

This allowed Barnsley players to move (including the runner) into that space behind. There were 3 players in that space he left. This has caused O'Connor to come across into the right back area vacated by Devine. O'Connor didn't know whether to stick or twist with one man or the other as the pressure from the midfield was lacking. He got turned around between the players and in the end didn't affect the play in anyway. Again maybe he could have stood his ground outside the area to try and force a decision from the Barnsley player and made a foul to stop the play.

As a result of the space in the right back area and O'Connor moving across, the gap between the 2 centre halves was huge, which Moncur exposed. Again NKP should have covered that area where the immediate danger was but instead again he backed off to try and cover the other Barnsley player in the box (who wasn't actually posing any danger). He should have moved across to stop Moncur.

Chicksen should have told NKP to move across and cover Moncur and Chicksen moved across to cover NKP's man to try and force them along the line towards the left back position and wide of the area.

Wright never influenced that defensively at all. He was just running along side. Unusually he never pointed at a player, it would have been more beneficial if he had done and told O'Connor to stay with the wide man whilst he got back into the centre to cover Moncur. But I didn't see any 'busting of guts' to get back to assist the defence at all.

No other midfielders in the clip right until the last second when LO'B enters the frame at the edge of the area.

So people can see what they want to see about individuals based upon their own individual views but would like to think this is an objective assessment of that clip.

Most commonly for me this season, is that our defenders don't 'engage' players in the correct areas and we back off and allow them to run and turn us and get in dangerous areas without getting tackles in.
