Anthony O’Connor wants to stay next season

Agree. I've been ambivalent about him but he's a decent player at this level, never gets injured and can do a job in different positions. I'd keep him.

Sounds like a great plan but reality doesn't work that way. Squad size, budget, players contracts means you can't just rotate and refresh. Clubs also progress by building a settled side. A defence with 4 average players who know each others game will perform far better than 4 individuals who are more talented. Yes, always look to improve but you have to be clever about it

 

A stat is a stat no matter which way round you want to put it. Can't just cherry pick the best bits. That's the problem with stats, without looking at the full picture they only tell you what the writer wants to hear.

 

If City are serious about signing Hosanna on loan, can't see ther being a place for O'connor, and he won't play second fiddle to him, personally would let him go, or play him as back up for midfield, he certainly is no right Back!

 

Every team needs a player that can fill in and do a decent enough job in 2 or 3 positions when called upon, especially when squad sizes are going to be reduced even further next season. AOC is that player for me, and I'd be very happy to see him still here next season.

 

Aoc should be given a new contract he is consistent wherever he is asked to play and just gets on with it . We would have struggled without him in the last few weeks

 

I think the point is that people are suggesting we wouldn't struggle without him next season because we've signed natural replacements in the positions he's been filling in at.

I actually think he's done well recently and is forcing a decision to be made which I'm not sure was the case 6 months ago.

 

If these figures from the football press are right Aoc does need to be on his way

billy is planning on getting to 500 career games (so not intending to retire yet) and he’s a great clubman. Anyone who has played football knows the importance of the dressing room and team spirit and players like Billy, who loves the club and is still contributing on the pitch, build that. He deserves another short deal while we are in L2.

 

They aren't right. The mythical figures never usually are. Callum Cooke took a paycut to come here.

 

Billy can get his 500th game at Harrogate if he wants. There's no room for sentiment and we can't afford to carry someone who isn't pushing the first XI.

Strange omission of Wood in those figures, given he is supposedly one of the highest earners.

 

I'm more concerned someone threw nearly the same amount at Evans this season.

 

Gareth Evans is not on over 3 grand week. Not a chance.

 

Only reason I can think of for inflated and unverified figures being made public is for agents to inflate their success. Or they're made up by a 15 year old.

 

I think he still has something to offer, myself, (assist yesterday case in point) and for £1k to £1.5k pw, or whatever we offer, I don’t think there will be much better about.

He isn’t a starter but Crankshaw and Vernam are all out attacking players with pace and he’s a bit more wily and one we can bring on to manage games in the final 20 mins.

I agree, on pure sentiment, no one deserves a deal.

I think he’s one of the key characters in the dressing room. A top bloke who loves the club, does so much in the community for the fans, and ‘gets’ what it means to play for us.

 

It was a 10 yard pass that I could have made. Cook did it all himself. If you're calling that an "assist" then it's not something I'm going to bother debating.

Now, if he'd have made that pass when clean through then fine, it's an assist.

 

You didn't make it though, O'connor did.

And it definitely was an assist, did he also make the pass for the volley that Cook should if buried in the first half?

O'C had a good game yesterday and should be offered a new contract well worth it!!

 

The difference is you wouldn't have been on the field and certainly not in the position to make that pass.
