It's difficult to know the reasons behind it, but I've always felt that it takes decades to build up a Club's core support. If we keep the relatively cheap home tickets going, maybe we'll slowly see the away support, for some of the longer trips, slowly build. A couple of promotions would, no doubt, help to accelerate this.

Of course, the cost of living crisis may also be partly behind some of the 'lower' support at long distance games, as people pick and choose which matches to go to a bit more.

Bang on, that's what I was thinking.
Our successes have been short term , say 5 year periods a few times over 40 years.
Teams like Forest, Norwich, Derby, both Sheffield clubs, Middlesbrough etc have had decades of relative success, promotions, cup finals, Europe in some cases.
That's what's grabbed multiple generations of supporters and kept them there.
We on the other hand have scattered generations.

Forget this figure of 18,000 home games. Away game attendances are the true definition of your fan base and our away following has never been particularly big. Doncaster was very much a one off. We could have taken more to places like Harrogate and Salford but generally we are on a par with the likes of Stockport. Hopefully the new generation of supporters we've attracted recently become enamoured enough with the club to build the away following to levels more akin to a 18,000 home crowd.

Those clubs you mention are all thought of as being traditionally clubs playing around the championship/premiership for most of their history. In my 40 odd years of watching its been mainly lower leagues and we've never been anywhere near the regular attendances of those clubs. In the periods i remember us doing well we'd be around the 10/11,000 mark. The cheap season tickets make affordable football available to Bradfordians but doing 3 or 4 away games could cost you more than a season ticket.
