My perception is that he’s more miss than hit, which seems to be shared by a few. Wright, Oduor, Walker all take better corners and would be worth trying on free kicks. Smallwood has improved during his time here, but to me I think we have better dead ball takers in the squad at the moment. GA obviously sees more of him than me so I might be wrong.

 

Yes, what a lot of people are missing about Smallwood being on set pieces is that he's on them because he's the best at taking them... one or two deadly set piece takers (who are good enough to be in the team in their own right) is one of the main priorities for me this summer

What I don't get is why he wasn't made aware of the appearance clauses in Stubbs and Smallwood's contracts when he arrived at the club. Imagine if he hadn't wanted either of them to stay and it gets to the end of the season and he makes it known to Ryan that he doesn't want to activate their one year options and he says 'too bad, they've already activated it themselves due to the number of times they've played'.

 

It’s difficult without actually knowing the number of “appearances” necessary. It could be 50-60-70% of available games . Good agents would and should use the negotiating principle for extensions to duration , contract improvement “ triggers” , wins, clean sheets , bonuses and so on.. There would be absolutely no way that a decent manager potentially weakens his side if a player was required for a critical game just because of a trigger. That would be footballing suicide however I agree in your sentiment, but without knowing the “ numbers” it’s difficult to know .

 

It was a pretty low start to be fair..

 

Without knowing exactly what triggered the clause I would guess it is appearances. If Alexander really wanted either of them to leave it would be no different to other players under contract, he'd just say that they won't get game time and say they can leave. Even if Alexander did know he really wouldn't want to be in a position where Stubbs was 1 game away from triggering the contract but not wanting to keep him next season and you are around January/February then you waste the wages for at least 2 months with an unhappy player on the sideline. Say for example the game that triggered it was the Sutton or Doncaster game where he was needed and there was no back up, it wouldn't go down well with player or fans if Alexander said I'm not playing him due to a clause in his contract. It's one thing doing that with a couple of games left and the season is dead but another thing with around a third of the season left and still fighting for the play offs.

Whatever the clause was it can't be a high one and we know the absolute latest it was triggered was the Doncaster game at the start of March.

Harry Clifton out of contract at Grimsby. Had a very good season in L2 last season, fans raved about him, but I think this season he hasnt hit those heights.

Parky has swung the axe at Wrexham, a lot of their promotion squad have been released, including Luke Young who has played over 250 league games for them and was a captain along with Tozer I believe? Aaron Hayden another gone. His stats are up there with the best CBs int he league this season, he's just rarely been fit.

 

Jack Payne released by Charlton. Dont think he'll struggle for another L2 club, done well at MK playing deeper.

 

Rather have Kemp , age and scoring ability wins it for me.
