1998-99 Season

Incredible season and incredible team. As others have said it was a delight and pleasure to see that team rip through the league. Mills and Blake were one of the best forward pairings we are ever likely to have at that level. Amazing midfield and a defence that was as solid as a rock.

Beagrie and Lawrence were the more outrageous talents in the team. Hardworking and very skilful.

A real joy to have been a part of that as a supporter.

 

I'm sure sometimes he just did it to take the piss.

 

Similarly, a pacier Blake would've been in the same bracket.

 

Heroes and unsung heroes everywhere. Whalley, Jacobs, Wright. Even the likes of Dreyer.

 

Now he was a good player. Sadly afflicted by that god awful disease MND too.

 

Having that ability to take the piss like Beagrie had and then know that your pinpoint cross was more than likely going to come to something must have been a very special feeling.


Waddle did it to a lesser extent in 96/97 but Beags was the absolute master.

 

Loved watching Waddle. Everton away....

 

That won’t be beaten but the 3-3 away at Huddersfield was a proper masterclass.

 

Was that the one we were 3-0 up in?

 

We were but it was back to 3-2 by HT.

Ironically,with all the talk about how shit our set pieces are at the minute all 3 goals came from Waddle corners.

2nd a Dreyer header
3rd a Steiner shot.

 

Around that time I sat at the front of the sunwin stand in the family section with my kids. Even they used to OLE when beags put the full back on his a@&e .many a time beagrie used to laugh and wink to the fans, a million miles from where we are now but priceless memories of a fantastic era

Were any games postponed in the 98/99 season?

 

Wasn't there one that was abandoned ? I seem to recall it was the one that Rankin scored his first goal in.

 

It was a great feeling going to Valley Parade almost knowing you were going to enjoy yourself. Such a magic season that was.

 

Palace at home.

We were losing. We won the replay.

Edit: We were in fact drawing when it was halted at HT.

 

Just watched a few, and just wow what a team. I just loved every minute of that season. We were fast skilful and lads just were at one with the fans. You couldn’t wait for the next match, and you went expecting to win every match. Lee Mills cost us a million, think Rankin did as well. Whalley was just superb. Beagrie will always be a superstar. Moore scoring regularly. The whole squad was top class and I am sorry for our young fans who didn’t get to witness the superstar team who took us all the way to the PL.
