Valley Parades location on a hillside makes me doubt that in the sense that it was difficult to develop. ( Rock substrate)That’s why most of the land from Queens Rd to Trafalgar street was shallow foundation housing with little or no industry . I can’t think of anything much in the way of anything higher than two story buildings anywhere on there during my childhood. That’s why most of the big mills were to the West of Manningham Lane or in the Valley bottom from Forster Sq to Shipley perhaps?

It was the through railway that did it for Leeds , absolutely no question . Bradford will always remain at the end of a branchline metaphorically.

They looked at it a hundred years ago Kev, remember reading that they were contemplating digging a near 3 mile tunnel under what is bowling area and meeting up with the Forster Square line. But the engineering was insane and cost prohibitive. Would love to have seen it built though.

https://www.bradfordhistorical.org.uk/allchange.html knew I'd read it somewhere.

Yes I’m into railways as you know…..It cost too much then and it’s too late now as those through routes are no longer required. Originally I believe it was once earmarked as an alternative fast through route to Scotland , ie sat in the middle of the East and West coast mainlines ….Alas

There were some very expensive large houses just north of Valley Parade. Walmer, Clifton, and Mornington Villas have some very impressive Victorian properties on them. Clearly their location and the exodus of wealth has seen their usage change dramatically. I would guess that the ability to build residential properties in the 1850-1900’s was more lucrative than using the land for industrial development.

My Mum was brought up in Manningham! Just over 10 minutes walk from my Nan’s house to Valley Parade.

Must have been in my playground! In those days there was nowhere in Manningham out of bounds Rod. Hard growing up at times but don’t regret a minute of it looking back.

My junior school teacher lived on there (with his mum I think). Just a few houses on from Oak Lane. He had a red bubble car parked outside.

My wife's sister did her dissertation on the woolmen's houses of Manningham. It was a good read (for a dissertation).

Indeed it was. Halfway down on the right hand side. Her house was just above it on the other side of the road and had a re-inforced cellar that was a bomb shelter, with tunnels to the two houses on either side.

I'm at a low ebb with this lot now, so I'm giving Tuesday a miss.

My son and I are meeting up for food prior to the game. We will make a decision on attendance there with a particular emphasis on team selection

Fortunately I was away and missed Saturday's shit show. Normally I really enjoy Tuesday night matches but I'm thinking of missing this one too. I have no enthusiasm left.
