To me it looks more lack of grass than drainage. I am not an expert on grass but would it be better to re- turf the pitch rather than seeding. Pre season you could still see bare patches as it had no density or time to mature and all the birds of Manningham taking half the seed. Rochdale had a problem some years back with the pitch prior to playing Spurs, they laid a new pitch and trained on it four days later before the game. I think Spurs contributed towards the cost but the pitch was top notch and played fine, don't know the cost , maybe we should give them a ring. Cost was 500k and layed in Feb

I have absolutely zero clue on maintaining a football pitch, so forgive me if my thinking on this matter is totally missing an obvious error, but why can't we invest in new rain proof covers and also have drainage channel installed all around the perimeter edges outside the pitch, then when heavy rain forecast just get the covers on and then sweep water build up on covers towards and down drainage channel?

The pitch was fine when we played against Wycombe, although it looked like crap. This is only a recent significant problem, despite being a problem for years but talk about an overreaction from some

    Genuine question.
Are there such things as rain proof covers that still allow the pitch to breath etc as needed?

I put a link up with the original post. This brand states, ‘Flexible, Tough and Recyclable, the hard wearing covers are lightweight strong and waterproof with UV protection plus a light transmission rate of 70% to help aid germination on natural grass’. https://matchsaver.com/products/matchsaver-ars-air-roller-system/
Just let Google search for you.

Costs would be somewhere between £750k-£1m plus then running costs of over £3k a day. Not a cheap option

Asking players not to plough 2 trenches with knee slides, in the unlikely event of scoring a goal, could help
Or at least not make things worse.

Genuine question, if the rain persists could there be a scenario we are at risk of not being able fulfil our home games? If yes, what is the solution eg. ground share?

Acknowledge this unlikely, but looking at the short term forecast the rain doesn’t seem to be letting up much.

It's just part of the much broader issue of not owning the ground. As much as there's a clear emotional attachment to VP, the real solution should be a new and modern stadium, shared with the Bulls and built at Odsal, jointly funded with the council. But it'll never happen.

Totally agree and Pete Wild (Barrow Manager) said the quality of the playing surface was what allowed us to play some super stuff against Wycombe, a comment backed up in the media. I will answer more fully in response to Bigrod's initial post later.

And taken up again at the end of the same season because it failed. Replaced by a traditionallly formed playing surface of fibre sand and seed.

There has to be a serious rethink. Again a system which protects the pitch from heavy rain, frost and facilitates some growth of the turf. Looking at the picture below, the system is ridged with a gradient to the sides of the pitch. It can allow some hot air to be circulated. As the other match saver system had a material which facilitates growth, then it is not beyond the whit of man to develop a new system, which is fit for purpose. If City is going to have solar panels fitted (another thing which was rejected as un achievable in the past), the cost of running the system potentially would not be prohibitive.
Erect the system three days before a match and remove on the morning (or afternoon if an evening kick off). It is clear that the current system is no longer truly fit for purpose.

I go to Headingley to watch Yorkshire cricket and they have massive rain cover’s which cover a large area of the pitch when there is a downpour. Don’t know if this would work though in winter as Yorkshire also then drive a vehicle over the pitch called a blotter which soaks up surface water and I imagine it would just carve up the Valley parade pitch.

    There are products out there.

There seems to be a ‘no can do’ mentality! Which frankly is very surprising.

A full size football pitch can easily be covered using Matchsaver air roller covers. Each air roller covers 16m x 72m. The inflatable air rollers are used to deploy the covers across the football pitch sideline to sideline. An air blower is used to inflate the rollers. https://matchsaver.com/matchsaver-football-pitch-covers/air-roller-pitch-protection-covers-for-football/#:~:text=A%20full%20size%20football%20pitch,used%20to%20inflate%20the%20rollers.

You meet up with them, discuss the issues about VP, storage etc.

    Watch this video. Shocking really!
