Sent to Swindon, it's the Bradford City alternative to Coventry.

Neither are wingbacks though Dennis, both are just stop gaps.

I do hope you're right about ditching wing backs though, we just don't have the squad for it at present and I'd definitely play a 4 at Crawley.

To be fair Doyle was a proven goal scorer for the majority of clubs he played for (unfortunately not us) where as Young is still very raw, wouldn't it be great if the lad did prove himself at Swindon, then Hughes has a decision to make, leave him at swindon or bing him back to help with our promotion push.

Just because somebody is on your books doesnt mean he has to nominated for your league squad. It means that he can not play for your 1st team. He can still sign for a non-league side. There have been several examples on this happening to players. Given that Hughes has basically told him that he wouldnt play for City again, then it highly unlikely he would have been in the league squad so there was always room for another player.

Youve only seen him in pre season friendlies so think its a bit daft to write him off.

Odour certainly has the experience to play as a wingback. He's played left fullback, left midfield and leftwing. What more could be asked of him? Admittedly, Gill less so.

I'm not suggesting Hughes will ditch wingbacks completely. Rather I believe he'll use different systems including 4 at the back against different opponents. He suggested that at the start of the transfer window when he said he was looking for players able to be flexible to play in different positions. And as he demonstrated too often last system, he is a tinkerer by nature when it comes to formations.

I do find it a tad odd that we made such a point early in the window about signing versatile players and then in pre-season, pretty much just stuck to the 5 at the back tactic. I mean, all well and good expecting these players with multiple positions under their belt to play whatever system, but would have been nice to see us try one of these versatile other tactics we talked up.

"A bit daft" to write him off?? I disagree. Sometimes you can see a player is too static and clumsy within a few appearances. Once can be forgiven, several times is too consistent for my liking and Platt is a better CB - in my opinion. The only positive about Taylor is his long throw, as I alluded to on another thread after the Rochdale game. I also don't think Kelly is ready to step up to being an ever present. We need to go with a flat-back 4, with Stubbs & Platt in the middle. The wing-back system needs to be ditched

If he does well at Swindon, I think the only reason we would curtail the loan, would being we had the opportunity to sell him on. Of course, if Hughes has already gone by then, that's a different matter!

I agree. The focus on the public pre-match games appeared to have been to give everybody in the squad (who wasn't injured or unfit!) the maximum amount of gametime. According to some on here there were also a couple of behind doors matches so maybe Hughes used those to try out different approaches. Hughes has of course seen most of the squad play for him in a more conventional back four based set up. Unless he's slept through some of last season's games, I'd expect him to already have a good understanding of most of them in that kind of formation.

Whilst flexibility in styles of play is routine at the highest levels of footie, I don't believe that approach is transferable to the lower leagues where skilsets are typically lower. Hughes clearly thinks otherwise.

Once watched them train at Apperley Bridge and all Young did was stroll about. No wonder he’s been sacked off.

Yes, writing a player off during pre-season is daft. Give him a chance to settle and play some competitive games before making a call like that.

Folk were calling Andy Cook fat, unfit and not part of Hughes plans this time last year.

Absolutely, Young won’t get more than 8 if he played every game all season except the two he won’t play against us.

Good point. Barrow saw through him after 4/5 games and benched.

So why did we pay a fee (almost unheard of at our level these days) and give him a a 3 years contract, Roger?

We had excellent away form last season so a similar set up and approach to last year will be fine for me. It's the approach at home that should be more adventurous.

Glad for Jake Young that he's got an EFL club.

There were a few telling him he needed to go ASAP or miss out on a loan club altogether, but I suspect he just turned down non-EFL clubs and his patience paid off.

I don't know if he's liked at the club or not, but I still wish him well.

Swindon Town seem particularly desperate this Summer, and yet STILL have put together an okay side...
