I agree. He is the kind of player we should be looking to recruit. He has a reasonable pedigree and plenty of experience. As you suggest, he'd make a good partner for Smallwood in central midfield - although neither have much pace - but also provide some flexibility. He played nearly a quarter of last season on the left wing presumably as part of a diamond. He's a battler as last year proved and he picked up plenty of injuries in that role. He missed 20% of games through injury last season. Looking at his games, after starting most games when he wasn't injured, he completed the full 90 mins in less than a quarter of them. I can't tell whether that was for tactical reasons, injuries in the game or simply running out of steam. So long as we have adequate backup for when he isn't available, he'd be a good acquisition imo.

I think Walker's got pace. But he has to be fully fit. If we get that early few games and late season version from last year, we'll be fine.

I'm not certain about the formation either!!

IF he signs for us - which is looking increasingly likely now Parker & The Sun have reported it - Williams would be a great addition to the team

If many people on here were to be believed, we won't be able to compete with the likes of Wrexham this season....

We shall see Steve? My only qualification…Is he a 90 minute or 60 minute player? We need solid back up if it’s the latter.

One thing about Hughes is that he has a lot of respect within football. You rarely hear a bad word said about him. And of course to players like Williams, he's a legend.

Add our magnificent crowd into the mix and we're easily the No.1 attraction in L2.

I'd quite like our strike force/midfield something along the lines of :

    Agyei Cook New/Chapman

    Williams Walker
    Smallwood

Abit of pace and trickery around Cook. Walker and Williams getting up and down the pitch, and Smallwood holding.

Yeah defo, MH is certainly a big attraction to certain players and we shouldn't underestimate his influence

He rarely lasts 90 these days because of his knees, far too many injuries when he was younger are catching up to him. Only managed to play 67% of Swindons minutes last season, completed 90 minutes just 11 times.

I'd imagine Walker had a worse % of minutes played for us? And that is why Williams would be a really strong addition. There were many games last season where Walker's fitness troubles and a lack of a like for like replacement meant we faded in games. The home leg of the play off semi final was a good example of that where Osadebe replaced him and we were a worse team because of that change.

L2 is going to be a tough league next season with tough games more often than not. Having a player who has played for big clubs and won promotions as an option to rotate with Walker could make a big difference. Not to mention he could help with the lack of goals from midfield.

My fear exactly ..... we need people who can run through a wall for 90 mins + so it's a worry signing people with poor injury records. That said didn't Halliday miss a year and then play 95% of games last season?

Walkers was way lower. He's a cracking signing, only trouble will be the money we have tied up in Walker and Williams, knowing neither will be able to finish 25 games a season.

You almost need to budget for a 3rd in that area too, otherwise looking at the squad we'll be seeing East for Williams and Osadebe for Walker happening fairly weekly and that drop off in quality is huge.

Agree lasting 90 minutes shouldn't be a problem at 29.

Surely we'll only know that next May?

Right now it's a completely pointless debate.

Gillead will run through a brick wall for 90 minutes but would you really want to retain him instead of signing Williams?

Signing athletes is simple, they're 10 a penny down here but signing real quality? Well, it's likely to come with caveats or issues, simply as we're in league two but that real quality can be the difference in many of the right games we'll witness next year.
